Fans of the Portland Timbers can now fly in style.

Alaska Airlines introduced its Portland "Timbers Jet" to a crowd of fans on Friday morning. The aircraft features the Timbers' name and logo and is covered in the team's green and yellow colors. The plane can accomodate 124 passengers and five crew members.

Alaska Airlines also announced it will extend boarding privileges to Portland International Airport passengers wearing an official Timbers jersey throughout the 2011 MLS season.

  1. Actually the champion’s league games are also included in the # of allowed charter flights.

Not sure if garber increased the # of charter flights this season.

  2. very cool. the New York Jets are the only other team that has a plane painted in their graphics. JetBlue unveiled it last year.

  3. Keep us posted how that goes next time you’re supposed to be flying from SeaTac to Chicago, Denver, LA etc and you decide to walk instead of getting on a plane that you can’t see the outside of from the inside.

  4. As a DC fan I agree and have been wishing to see something like this for years.

Would love to see a setup that’s more of a “party bus” kind of experience – somewhat reduced pricing on the assumption of group buys through the fan clubs, time to interact with players building more unity, and a great way to involve away fans.

As a DC fan – I’m continuing to grow envious of the West. Respect where it’s due.

  6. To answer your question, MLS teams are limited to a certain number of chartered flights per year and I’m not sure if extra allowances are given for CCL travel.

  7. This is a commercial plane that will be part of the regular Alaska rotation. The Timbers don’t always even fly Alaska since they don’t cover all US regions.

  8. The design is a composite of 2 “paint the plane” contest winners. Also, Horizon (an Alaska subsidiary) also have UO, OSU, Boise State, Idaho, UW, WSU and I think even Montana State themed planes.

  9. The color scheme notwithstanding, “Portland Timbers” written in giant letters across the side of the plane should leave no doubt as to which team it is.

  10. Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t MLS forbit teams from taking chartered flights or even flying anything above economy?

    Slightly ironic….
