Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

The Gold Cup may be looming, but just which forwards U.S. national team head coach Bob Bradley will bring to the tournament remains unclear. Bradley's upcoming decision was made a bit tougher this weekend as Edson Buddle scored a spectacular equalizer in FC Ingolstadt 04's 1-1 draw with TSV 1860 Munich.

Having come off the bench at halftime, Buddle netted his third goal of the season when he beat a pair of defenders with some nifty dribbling moves before hitting a lobbed shot with his left foot as he fell to the ground. Buddle's goal should help the forward's cause as he attempts to make the United States' Gold Cup team over the likes of Teal Bunbury, Herculez Gomez and Charlie Davies.

Maurice Edu didn't find the back of the net, but he and Rangers got one step closer to the Scottish Premier League title with a 4-0 thrashing of Heart of Midlothian. Edu started, played 72 minutes and received a yellow card in Rangers' third to last match of the season.

Not all was good news this weekend. Jozy Altidore didn't get a chance to play in Bursaspor's game versus Besiktas as it was postponed due to pre-game fan violence, and Oguchi Onyewu was not deemed fit enough to partake in FC Twente's thrilling extra-time win over Ajax in the KNVB Cup (Dutch Cup) final after suffering an injury in training this week.

What do you think of these performances? Do you see Buddle making the U.S. national team for the Gold Cup? Think Rangers and Edu will win the SPL title again? Worried by Onyewu's most recent injury, or just happy that FC Twente won the Dutch Cup?

  1. “he seems to deserve that much”

You act as if Freddy has the same stature as Donovan and should be returned to his throne as soon as possible. In reality, Adu has had many shots and has done nothing for the Senior USMNT.

The Turkish 1st Division is very highly rated in Europe but it’s not clear to me what that means about the second division. While all I’ve seen are highlights, it doesn’t seem defense is a real high priority.

We’ve seen Adu do well in short bursts before so if I’m BB I wait and see how he finishes the season. I’d even wait to see how he starts next year. Adu’s “good in short bursts” act is pretty old by now.

I wouldn’t put him on the Gold Cup squad. If this truly is a watershed time for Freddy then there are plenty of upcoming WC qualifiers to work him in.

  2. “Fischy, Davis could be a great speed option off the bench, which fits the counterattacking style of the US team. IMHO, Davis is a much better option than Gomez (a poacher with an average speed). ”

Gomez is a different type of player from Davies. When he is hot he scores from everywhere.

“Plus, Gomez has not been called to the USMNT since the WC and has not had that great of the season in Mexican league after being its leading goalscorer the year before (when he was brought in a sub for the USMNT). In contrast, Davis is leading the MLS in scoring and has a much greater upside not just for the Gold Cup but also for WC2014. ”

Davies hasn’t been called up for the USMNT since before the World Cup either. Gomez is starting to heat up. And I wouldn’t say that the teams Charlie has faced were better than the teams Gomez has faced.

I’ve seen all of Davies goals except the last one. Three were penalties and on the two scored from the run of play both were the result of the defender handing Charlie the ball near the gaol. Very bad defense. Still, a goal is goal, even penalties but, I have yet to see evidence that Davies can score in tougher situations. The USMNT doesn’t get many “gimmees”. If I’m Bradley I would wait a while on Davies and see how he does with better opposition.

  3. Does spector deserve a shot at minutes at central mid?

Maybe at the expense of MB who is not seeing any first team minutes in months?

Of course they are different types of players, but maybe thats a postive.
