Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

By FRANCO PANIZO

In recent months, Alejandro Bedoya has been the subject of several transfer rumors. He'll likely be involved with more after his latest performance.

Bedoya was involved in all of Orebro SK's goals in the team's 3-1 win over GAIS on Sunday. He helped set up the opener with a shot that forced a save before a teammate knocked in a rebound, then followed that up with a cheeky backheel to assist on the club's second goal, and capped the scoring with a header. Bedoya's performance saw him break a personal-best in goals scored in a season (he now has four), and could force him onto the Gold Cup roster if he wasn't already on it.

Jozy Altidore did not find the back of the net, but he did earn a start as Bursaspor qualified for the Europa League with a 1-0 win against Genclerbirligi. Altidore started and played 68 minutes in Bursaspor's season finale.

Another youngster who earned a start this weekend was Joe Corona. Having played to a scoreless draw with Cuauhtemoc Blanco's Irapuato in the first leg of the promotion playoffs, the California-born midfielder helped Tijuana gain promotion to the Mexican first division with a 90-minute performance in a 2-1 win in which he scored a goal and added an assist.

What do you think of these performances? Expecting Bedoya to play and make an impact in the Gold Cup (should he make the team)? Think Corona could potentially make the U.S. team for the 2012 Olympics?

  1. I’m sure if he does something to warrant more respect, he’ll get it. For starters, he could start scoring in a league that doesn’t have first division reserve teams in it.

  2. Freddy Adu has actually played really well for rize this year. interested in seeing if he helps his team get promoted and if he stays there. any chance he gets a look for the GC?

  3. What you meant to say was “some kid boned by Ives” Taylor is the Rodney Dangerfield of football – getting no respect..then some kid scores a goal out of all leagues, the 2nd Mex Div, and gets front page SBI rave reviews..and if he had cohonas he would go to Europe.

  4. Actually, Fulham will find out Thursday if they’re in the Europa League next season – which would be a nice finish. Unfortunately, it’s not based on their points. It’s a Fair Play spot, and Zoltan Gera’s red card today may give the spot to….wait for it…..Blackpool!

  5. Well. Joe Benny Corona is going to be playing in the Mexican Primera within public transportation distance of the greater San Diego metropolitan area next year. and Matt Taylor is just some kid who gives you a boner. so…?

  6. Good grief. Not this again. Corona isn’t as unknown as you seem to think. He’s been getting writeups on MLSS. Bruce Arena even came away impressed with him and brought up his name after the Galaxy played Tijuana in a preseason friendly.

  7. Some unknown Yank scores a goal in a Mexican promotion match, gets a video tag and thread to go with it. Where else? On SBI.

All this while Matthew Taylor ripped the back of the nets in the 3.BL and can’t even get a whisper. Agenda? Things that make you go hmmm?

  8. PLEASE ban the use of “cheeky” from this website… where are you writers from? do you use the loo? drive a lorry? find some american adjectives!!! i want to hear this “american voice,” not rehashed brit-speak.

  9. Bedoya has been on fire the last month. I was waiting for SBI to notice this trend specifically instead of just posting match by match standout performances by him.

Agreed on everything said above about Guzan.

  10. I don’t know anything specific, but I do remember there being an exemption to the 75% rule for keepers. I’m not sure what % of games keepers need or if they’re judged by different criteria, but there is some workaround for keepers.

  11. It sucked, but it opened big internationally. There are two sequels already planned with I believe the script for the fifth already completed.

  12. Agreed on trying to get on a newly promoted team. His visa is up at the end of 2012, so I don’t know if he’ll be able to get another one since he hasn’t been playing in a lot of USMNT games. Do goalkeepers get an exemption? How did he get the visa for AV in the first place since he wasn’t playing then either?

  13. Evidently the fans want Mannone from Arsenal though, I guess he had 5 clean sheets in 7 games when he was there on loan even though he was battling injuries his whole loan period there

  14. The thing is Guzan is seen as a no2 and not experienced enough for a team to risk making their no.1 But he could challenge for a no1 spot on a newly promoted team

  15. Well considering 2 of their best strikers were injured for most of the season and they couldn’t even win an away match for like Forever.

  16. at times that team looked absolutely lousy. Glad their season turned out so well. I would love if Fulham could put together a solid team and build around Dempsey this summer

  17. Guzan was solid at Hull some how he was able handle the barrage of shots (84 saves in 16 games) and come away with a 0.875 gaa is pretty good even if it is 2nd Division. Even had 5 clean sheets to go along with it. Hopefully a Premier League team will pick him up since Aston Villa seems to want to get rid of him.

  18. I’m curious how long til Yelldell is a permanent fixture in the USMNT. I mean I thought Hahnemann was retiring. Guzan is a solid no2 and Yelldell could help the ranks until an up and coming young keeper is ready.

  19. Clint Dempsey has 12 league goals, 3 league assists in 37 matches this past season. Not bad on a team that struggled and finished at 8.

  20. Westberg’s team secured promotion to Ligue 1 with that win.

However, he only has a 1 year deal. Hope they re-sign him.

  21. O/T but did you guys enjoy the 4th Pirates film? Do ya think they’ll be a 5th? I saw it last night late around 11 and fell asleep a few times and missed the ending.

  22. Bedoya, come August you will be in either Germany or Holland my friend. Keep up the good work. You’re earning yourself a spot in the 2014 WC

  23. I’m impressed by the confidence and aggressive style of play he’s showing. Other than Dempsey, what other American is playing with that bit of confidence abroad right now?
