Barcelona claims third consecutive La Liga title

Barcelona 1 (Reuters)

A 1-1 tie for Barcelona isn't typically a result to celebrate for the club's faithful, but that wasn't the case on Wednesday as Barcelona won its third consecutive La Liga title.

Playing on the road against Levante, Barcelona won the La Liga title for the 21st time in its history with a 1-1 draw. A Seydou Keita goal was negated by a Felipe Caicedo finish, but that didn't stop Pep Guardiola's men from celebrating after the match.

Barcelona has two games left to play this season, but the club can now turn its focus towards the Champions League final against Manchester United on May 28.

Happy to see Barcelona win the La Liga title? Who is most likely to drop the La Liga trophy under a bus?

  1. So that went south quickly. The comment I made was more about how absolutely loaded Barca and Real are than it was a commentary on La Liga as a whole. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that the quasi-reserve/squad Barca and Real teams I was referring to would probably finish at or near the top of the table in almost every league in the world, the teams are just THAT loaded.

In terms of “lopsided”, I’d say the top 5/6 La Liga teams (Barca, Real, Villarreal, Valencia, Atletico, Sevilla) compare pretty favorably to the top 5/6 of any other league in the world. The difference in La Liga is that Barca and Real have been SO good recently, it makes everyone else seem like also-rans. But if you compare them, I feel like the second-tier of teams in La Liga would be very, very competitive in most of the other leagues.

  2. Dude, I am not sure why you think that EPL teams are superior. Two EPL teams faced Real and Barca in the Champion’s league this season and both were eliminated. Tottenham lost to Real by an aggregated score 5-0. And while the aggregate 4-3 scoreline flattered Arsenal, it did not reflect the flow of the games, in which Arsenal had the ball less than 25% of the time. In fact, Arsenal did not attemp a single shot (on goal or otherwise) on the second leg against Barca, while Barca took about 20 shots in that game. Even in the first leg, when Arsenal played the game of their lives, they could have easily lost.

  3. No one will drop the trophy. Unlike the current Real Madrid players, Barcelona’s squad is quite used to holding the trophies.

  4. Who said anything about the EPL? The fact that the EPL is just as lopsided doesn’t change the fact that La Liga is a two horse race.

  5. Barca’s not the pristine soccer club–they pay to poach stars off of other teams, too–but compared to Real Madrid they come off smelling like roses. If it’s gotta be one of those two teams, I’ll take Barca anyday (though I’d LOVE to see somebody outside of the big two take it. Seriously, La Liga is becoming a two-horse race like the SPL).

And diving aside, when they’re clicking, they play the best soccer pretty much ever. Fantastic team to watch, and I’m so glad that cable packages allow us to see Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, and co. in their primes.

  6. He is in a 2-yr contract that says he must win the CL next year or he’s booted. Give him time, he won a treble in his 2nd yr at Inter.

  7. There are more stronger teams in the epl. liverpool, chelsea, man united, arsenal. this are teams that have beaten real madrid and barcelona. Heck Man city, everton can sure give a good fight to barca and madrid. seriously barca and madrid get use to scoring so much because of weak teams in spain. Almost all mid table teams in spain are fighting relegation check for yourself

  8. Except that Madrid and Barca are among the best teams in the world so its no surprise they dominate their league just like other teams that make it far in Champions League do. Also Valencia and Villarreal are far better then most second tier teams in most leagues.

The SPL second tier teams aren’t competitive even against weak teams in European competitions. The SPL might as well just have 2 teams in the EPL since they basically now only have 2 teams that win everything always. At least Valencia can make it out of the group stage in the champions league and Atletico Madrid can win a Europa League.

  9. Depends on what your criteria for “lopsided” is. EPL may have the same teams lifting the trophy, but at least there are more teams that can actually challenge for it. SPL just has barca and real, who don’t have to worry about anyone but each other.

  10. Love the comments above about La Liga being “lopsided” and being like the SPL. Since the 99-00 season…

3 teams have won the EPL
4 teams have won La Liga

Go back 20 years and it is 5 for La Liga and 4 for the EPL. By the reasoning of many people in here, the EPL is more lopsided than La Liga. Sad when facts get in the way, huh?

  11. Good for Barca. Alves will drop it for sure. As the trophy is getting passed to him a breeze will come up and, by nature, he’ll do a 360, go to clutch his shin and on his way to the ground will lose hold of the trophy.

On a somewhat unrelated note – in totally hypothetical world, if Barca and Madrid played an entire season using a team made up of this years’ squad players with one or two regulars (i.e. the team Real sent out against Valenica and the one Barca trotted out against Sociedad), would they still finish 1-2 over the course of a season?

  12. no lie, I was in Barcelona in 2005 when they won their first liga trophy in a while (some 5 odd years I think) and they won it by an away draw against LEVANTE, weeeeiiiiiiirrrrrrd.

  13. I think PIQUE will be the culprit, in dropping the trophy, defenders don’t have such good hands these days, only the forwards do!!!

  14. This isn’t a surprise, now Real will go another season without winning anything of REAL importance, for all the money they’ve spent they still coulndn’t bring back the Galacticos Era. 😉
