Mid-Day Ticker: Dalglish gets Liverpool deal, Bayern closes in on Neuer & more

Liverpool is hoping to get back to its winning ways next season, and the club is counting on Kenny Dalglish to lead the way.

Liverpool appointed Dalglish as permanent manager of the club, agreeing to a three-year deal with the former Liverpool player. The deal comes as a result of Dalglish turning things around at the club since taking over for Roy Hodgson on a temporary basis in January. The club could finish as high as fifth this season.

This will be the second time Dalglish has managed Liverpool, having done so from 1985-1991. During that tenure, Dalglish helped Liverpool claim three league titles and three FA Cups.

Here are more stories from Thursday:

Bayern set to sign Neuer

Bayern Munich looks like it has all but beaten Manchester United in the race to sign Schalke 04 goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. The 25-year-old is hot property after helping Schalke reach the semifinals of the Champions League this season, and Bayern are ready to finalize a deal with him that's worth up to $31.5 million.

Lennon attacked by fan

Celtic manager Neil Lennon was attacked by a fan during his club's 3-0 victory over Heart of Midlothian on Wednesday. Lennon was assaulted after Celtic went up 2-0, and his attacker was placed in custody and charged with assault aggravated by religious prejudice and breach of the peace.

Van Nistelrooy keen on move to England, Spain

Hamburg striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to be a free agent this summer, but he already knows where he wants to play next season. The 34-year-old Nistelrooy, who has been linked with Tottenham recently, said he is open to playing in Spain and England, with the latter being a place where he states he has several good contacts.

Is Dalglish the right man for the Liverpool job? How do you see Neuer fitting in at Bayern? Are you more surprised or shocked that a fan attacked Lennon? Where do you think van Nistelrooy should go?

  1. It’s a great announcement.

We have him contracted until 2015 now, and he’ll fetch a hell of a price from other teams when its time to sell.

  2. Agreed David. Thought that was pretty pathetic. Surprised they didn’t have confetti and a band. With due respect to Brek, the re-upping-signing of a player does not deserve a big press conf. Small one, sure. Breaking news, no.

    Good luck to Brek.

  3. Ruud is getting on in his years and is extremely injury prone still… Which makes him perfect for MLS.

We know Spurs are looking for a striker so I can see him there more than anywhere else. He’s still so useful in the 18 yard box and they need a poacher. No one else can afford him that would want him.

  4. P.S.

How do FC Dallas dans feel about the “major announcement” made about a player who doesn’t even really have a position on your team? haha

  5. Just read some rumors of Liverpool snatching up Brad Friedel this summer.

I think its past Ruud a little, but he could be a good bit part for a team like Spurs. They have been lacking the poacher type, and Ruud is cool under pressure. Especially if they are pushing in the league for top 4/Europa league.

What will Man U do? Steklenberg? I wasn’t blown away by him

  6. Liverpool would have been insane not to bring back King Kenny. Also the whole Scotland thing really creeps me out. I didn’t know there was an Al-Queda Scotland.
