Portland vs. San Jose: U.S. Open Cup qualifier (Your Running Commentary)

One Major League Soccer team will be a step closer to the U.S. Open Cup field of 40 by night's end.

The San Jose Earthquakes travel north to JELD-WEN Field to face the Portland Timbers in an Open Cup qualifying semifinal. The winner advances to a final play-in game against the Chicago Fire, where one of the league's two play-in berths in the Open Cup proper will be on the line. Either Sporting Kansas City or the New England Revolution will claim the other berth.

Tonight's game is San Jose's only chance this week to put some bad results in the rear-view mirror, as the club does not have a league game this weekend. Portland, meanwhile, will look to continue its dominance at home. The match will be streamed live on both the Earthquakes' and Timbers' team sites beginning at 10:30 p.m.

If you will be watching tonight's Open Cup qualifier, please feel free to share any thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below. Enjoy the game.

  1. Nobody in PDX cared about this one. Especially the Timbers. Subs got to run for 120′, that’s about all you can say for this one.

  2. Thank the gods. Desperately needed a win for our morale if nothing else. Can’t really say this was mostly our first team or subs in light of 7 new starters last weekend in Philly. Didn’t have Ampai, Busch, Leitch, or Dawkins, and Lenhart came on late w/ Mcloughlin. Corrales was getting torched so badly by Zizzo the whole game we will likely see Morrow start at LB again.

  3. What a finish! Congrats to SJ and Cronin with a great cross to Opara. Football can be a cruel game sometimes. Sorry Timbers fans.

  4. My first thought was handball. I’m pretty sure I saw a white arm knock it in, but I couldn’t see whose it was.

  5. Ugh MLS is so bush league 🙁

A substitution could not be made because the 4th official had to take longer to get the board to display the player’s number.
