Real Madrid and Chivas de Guadalajara will meet at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego on July 20 as part of this summer's World Football Challenge, tournament organizers announced on Wednesday. Madrid is already slated to play the Los Angeles Galaxy in a WFC match at the L.A. Coliseum on July 16.
Reports out of Philadelphia suggest that Chivas and the Galaxy may not be the only opponents for Madrid in the USA this summer, either. The Philadelphia Daily News is reporting that the Philadelphia Union and Real Madrid are in talks for a July 23 friendly that would take place at Lincoln Financial Field and also be a part of the WFC.
One potential hurdle for that friendly is that the Union is scheduled to play the Seattle Sounders that day, meaning the MLS match would have to be rescheduled in order for the Madrid friendly to come to fruition.
What do you think about this development? Plan to go to the match in San Diego? Hope to see the Union get a crack at Real Madrid?

least likely to rain in Seattle is what: 70% :p
+1
MLS will accomodate them, but if not, they don’t have to forefeit. With expanded roster sizes, they could simply send their reserves to play against Seattle and have their starters play against Real.
But Union won’t be able to play their type of defensive game against Mourinho’s team. Mourinho will be content to surrender possession, have Real park the bus, throw hard tackles at Union’s players, and hope to catch them on the counter. At the post game conference, he will complain about the refs favoring the home team and having to play one man down due to the undeserved red card to one of his players. Le Toux and Mwanga will be accused of diving. 🙂
Great, the one weekend of the year least likely to have rain in Seattle (you can look up the probabilities) and they move the game to October. Letter to the FO is currently being prepared, I’m pissed.
2-0 win for seattle seems fair if Philly decides not to play them.
Can’t we see this as a little payback to Philly for rescheduling the Real Salt Lake game for the good of the league back during the CONCACAF Champion’s League?
100% agreed. I already have my ticket for that Philly game and we should not have to reschedule to accommodate a meaningless friendly, regardless of the opponent. Pick a day that works with the league schedule or wait until next time.
no doubt. i would highly doubt we would reschedule for that, especially with the clusterf**k of games sounders have w/the other tourneys
you my friend, are a dork.
haha!agree with BenH. union is more of a defensive minded team in which the rest of the league is noticing. union will not finish in the top 8.
Agreed. I’m kinda hoping Seattle hold firm on this and refuse to reschedule. It’s a little embarrassing to be seen as a league that will do anything to accommodate the big world clubs.
I understand the exposure and money and whatnot, but there is definitely a line to be drawn. I mean come on, we have an actual season to play! Put the friendlies where you can, but don’t bend over backwards for the other clubs.
I know the money is important, and the exposure, etc., etc., but shouldn’t MLS have a little more pride? Scheduling exhibitions in the middle of an already crowded season — even moving league games to accommodate the visitors — makes MLS look like a bunch of youngsters who are just happy to play with the big boys. I don’t like it.
I guess they can forfiet the Seattle game if the money from playing Real is more important than the possible points from playing Seattle.
…..uhhhhhhh
I could. Philadelphia do not have the technical ability to beat Real.
The Union are actually scheduled to play at Seattle on July 23, not host.
I don’t think anyone could argue with the fact that the Philadelphia Union have the technical ability to beat Real Madrid.
