Red Bulls vs. Chivas USA: Match Night Commentary

The New York Red Bulls will look to keep their unbeaten streak going tonight when they play host to Chivas USA at Red Bull Arena (7pm, Telefutura).

The Red Bulls are coming off a 1-1 draw against the Los Angeles Galaxy, and will look to cushion their lead atop the Eastern Conference standing. Chivas USA saw its own winning streak snapped last week in a 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake.

For New York, the key will once again be Thierry Henry and the French star leading an offense that has boasted some of the best passing in the league. Chances might be tough to come by though against a Chivas USA defense that has allowed just two goals in five matches.

SBI will be providing live commentary on tonight's match, so please feel free to follow along. As always, you are welcome to share your own thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Enjoy the action (Commentary is after the jump):

  1. Have to agree that Backe seems to favor the internationals over our USA boys. I’m not saying that these guys aren’t good but our starting line-up includes only ONE USA player. How do we promote American soccer when we still don’t believe in our own talent? (At least on the Red Bulls).

  2. I may sound overly patriotic and I know rodgers hoas scored a few goals, but i have a hard time getting excited to spend the time and money to bring my kids to see the red bulls live when one of the most exciting young forward talents in us history (albeit still developing) sits on the bench for an over-the-hill 2nd tier English league brawler. I know he played for backe at notts, but come on… My kids want to see the future of us soccer (who happens to be twice the threat as backe’s favorite). I also get sick when I see Ballouchy in t he midfield instead of Tchani. I am still on board and cheering hard… just not going to kill myself to get to the game on a Sunday yet.

  3. I agree and it feels like Backe is too stubborn to realize how horrible Ballouchy really is. Hopefully they unload him and do a little shopping in the next transfer period.

  4. This is the Braunihno show!
Pretty open match so far, just wish that arena could get filled up. I can’t figure out why MSG shows a boring fan clapping casually after Henry’s goal? They should’ve shown some guy going batshit. It would help build up support for the team.

  5. Perfect example of how poor the officiating is.

That tackle on Richards is without a doubt a yellow card, and the official doesn’t even come close to bringing it out.

  6. Mike, forgive me, but you don’t know what you’re talking about. Do you realize how often this club has had fantastic crowds in their history? Do you have any idea how many great crowds they had in their first few seasons? If a club screws over their potential fanbase THAT often, for THAT long, you only have to expect that it’ll be a long, hard road to win them back. There are 19 MILLION people in this area, pretty sure there’s some possible MLS fans.

  7. I think there may be other markets you could concentrate on, instead of whining about NY….. You know Dallas, Colorado, Columbus, New England,… Or maybe the ‘Cascadia’ fans can start to worry about their own teams and why they have problems at home or on the road.

  8. Seattle consistently sells out in rain, and it appears so does Portland. At some point people will have to face the fact that NY isn’t that hot for soccer, at least not for MLS.

(SBI-And you might consider the fact that teams starting out new always draw well. New York drew big crowds in the early years as well, but a decade of ineptitude drove plenty of fans away.)

  9. Settle down Ricky, it’s still early in this season. This team will eventually average more than 20k. Keep in mind they had more than a decade of terribly inconsistant performances, and an awful stadium to watch soccer in, and a really bad relationship with their fans. It’s gonna take a few years to heal that. But Red Bull NA have made the right choices, so it’ll eventually happen.

  12. Red Bulls have a crappy fan base. Great team that plays beautiful soccer and they cant even average 20k fans a game.
