SBI MLS Best XI: Week 9

Carlos Ruiz and Bobby Convey scored two of the best goals of the season last weekend, and those scores as well as their overall performances helped them both earn places in SBI's MLS Team of the Week this week.

Ruiz's long-range volley and Convey's curling free kick were the highlights, but not everyone on the Best XI scored goals. Steven Lenhart and Osvaldo Alonso made the cut for their impressive overall efforts, while Nick Rimando made the team for keeping another clean sheet in acrobatic fashion.

  1. I’d have to think the head of those warriors who lost to the Aztecs would higher on that list than the Jabulani.

Full disclosure; I’ve never played with either the Jabulani or a severed warrior’s head.

  2. I remember when Ronaldinho claimed his hail mary rainbow goal was 100% intentional. This was the shot that dropped from heaven behind Seaman in the 2002 World Cup Brazil vs England.

Of course he said it was intentional. Who could prove him wrong? If Convey claims it was intentional how is anyone going to prove him wrong?

None of you will ever know.

  3. Alvarez fails as a soccer player. He is a waste of a spot on the field most of the time, but then once or twice a season he will score a goalazo. Been watching him since he was drafted in the league and he has not progressed much as a player over his career.

  4. RSL’s defense was great in picking up its 1st points ever in the big D so i’m glad to see nicky get the nod. but borchers also had a fantastic game & made up for some slips by olave. also, beltran did well containing the speed of chavez and dealing with shea’s size. he had some great runs and sent some dangerous balls into the box. too bad sabo and alvarez are utterly ineffective as a strike combo.

  5. Probably the first and last time, based on their scarcity, that you’ll see two left backs make the “best of” in the same week.

  6. I literally choked on my food when I unexpectedly saw Ruiz’s face after loading soccerbyives.net. Honestly, pick any other player from this week’s best 11…Ruiz makes me sick.

  7. Why does Adidas keep forcing the Jabulani abomination on MLS (and the Bundesliga)? Have you guys played with that thing? It is the worst ball in human history…

  8. G.John had a perfect performance vs RSL including a weak foot shot attempt (the one that got Rimando on this list) yet he doesnt even get an honorable mention?

  9. please don’t be that guy (unless you’re lenHart’s mom). they never have any friends, eat lunch alone in the cafeteria, and eventually show up to school with pipe bombs
