SBI MLS Player of the Week: Justin Braun

In one of the easier awards to select, Chivas USA's Justin Braun earned SBI's MLS Player of the Week honors after scoring a hat-trick in the Goats' 3-2 victory against the New York Red Bulls at Red Bull Arena on Sunday.

Braun beat out a strong field that included Landon Donovan and Fabian Castillo among others.

Having recently lost his starting job to Marcos Mondaini, Braun took full advantage of the opportunity created by Mondaini's red card suspension to shred New York's normally stingy defense for three goals, as many goals as the Red Bulls had allowed all season before Sunday.

If you missed Braun's goal-fest, here they are: goals one, two and three.

What did you think of Braun's performance? Who would have gotten your vote if not for Braun?

  1. Wow I honestly didn’t expect this! Not in a million years would I have thought Braun would win Player of the Week! Amazing. I never would’ve thought of that 🙂

  2. Braun is a beast. His skill level has improved since last year. Martin Vasquez encouraged him to attack and take on defenders. This year he’s had to shake off an injury in January and get healed up.

I think Robin Fraser has allowed him time to heal.

  3. RBNY has looked miserable at the back several times this season but Braun was the first one to take advantage of it.

  4. I was at the game, and I turned to my friend to tell him to keep an eye on Braun, as he has the potential to play a role at the next level. Happy he took advantage of his playing opportunity to start, though I wish the Red Bulls weren’t the ones getting shelled. Guy started with a beautiful goal and finished up by being in the right place at the right time for a tap in.

Also helped that the Red Bulls were miserable in the back…

  5. Great choice! Can’t wait for NYRB fans start complaining that the award should have gone to a more deserving Tim Ream.
