Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

It could be a big day for the city of Manchester.

With a draw or victory at Ewood Park, Manchester United would clinch its 19th Premier League championship. United States midfielder Jermaine Jones and the rest of his Blackburn teammates will do what they can to prevent the title celebration from happening on their turf.

Manchester City, meanwhile, can end an extended trophy drought by topping Stoke City in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium. For the Potters, a win would be just as monumental.

Those matchups are just two of the key ones to keep an eye on throughout Saturday. Others include Ricardo Clark's side Eintracht Frankfurt meeting Borussia Dortmund as it looks to stave off relegation and the PSG-Lille Coupe de France final matchup.

If you will be watching any of Saturday's action, please feel free to share any thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below. Enjoy the games (TV schedule is after the jump):

  1. this is coming from a DC fan- Ngwenya is horrible. he needs to be traded, benched, or just cut. it’s in the opposing teams favor to have him out there.

come on Ben, quit playing this guy!

  5. Or logic would suggest that it’s about 30 comments vs. 200 comments on those threads. Logic could also suggest that it is CL vs. EPL tie that led to the inevitable. But, logic defies those that play whine and cry in their victim roles.

  6. Have to agree with you.

But you shouldn’t be surprised at the lack of outrage on this website. Most commenters on this website are huge United homers.

Two weeks ago Barcelona was the beneficiary of some calls, and they surrounded the official and were lauded as the worst thing to ever happen to modern football.

Fast forward two weeks with the EPL Title on the line and not a single mention of a horrible PK call and subsequent surrounding of the official. It was never about what Barcelona was doing. It was about Barcelona themselves.

Just like now, it’s not about what United is doing, it’s about United.

  7. i have not seen the play, but people may want to look at the US soccer week in review for referees. I think it was last week that they talked about the Bunbury pk call and said that the question of whether the attacker can get to the ball is irrelevant. All that matters is if it is a foul and whether the ball is in play at the time of the foul.

  8. Was very influential to get them the championship as well. I can seem him getting a Golden Boot at United in the future with all the opportunities they create.

  9. A Black Day for the EPL as the officials intercede, and hand United the title. United didn’t need their help. It would have been great to see United go all out in the final 15 minutes as they have all year. From my replay Chicharito had already lost the ball and it was crossing the end line on contact with the goalie. Five United players were allowed to assault the linesman (Luke were you watching) without penalty to assure the title. SAF got away with one of the worst goal-tending displays since Spurs, Gomes.

  10. Yaya Toure with the goal to put City up 1-0 with just minutes left to play. Blue Moon rising! Can’t wait for next seasons CL football. Go City and go Timbers!

  11. Man City should be up a few goals in this game. If they aren’t careful they will be going home with no hardware.

  12. It is difficult to believe that last year CHICHARITO was just another kid trying to make it big in soccer.

Today, he’s champion with highest valued (by $) team on the planet.

    Congratulations.

  13. he stills need to spend a little more on the midfield. Thats the only weak area i see in united. The owner could be a african, arab, yellow, american, and alien whatever as long as they spend good money on the club and doesnt get the club in trouble.

  14. yeah the goalie should have let the ball leave instead of risking it. especially in the penalty box. I seen worst calls in epl, la liga and bundesliga than this one. Plus hernadez was never going to get to the ball.

  15. Thought the keeper was playing the angle between Hernandez and the goal. Instead Chicharito kicks the ball directly out of bounds and the keeper clips his left (towards goal) leg. That’s not a penalty for me. If there’s ANY way Hernandez can play his next touch, then United gets the call but he played it directly out of bounds AWAY from goal.

  16. So if the ball is clearly going out then the referee can’t make that judgement call and say, “get up you were never going to make a play on that.” I may be a little ignorant on referee protocol for penalty kicks. It’s still a garbage pk, and I hate the impact referees can have.

PS Did you see Jones and Hernandez getting into at the top of the box after the pk call was given. I hope it was more than friendly conversation.

  17. Where are the cries from the Man U supporters to get the Americans out? What a bunch of spoiled fans.

Congrats to Furgie and the team, they played a great season.

  18. I don’t see any of the Man U fans wearing those green and yellow scarves anymore. I guess they only pull those out when they don’t win the title?

  19. man!!! this is the same thing like levante vs barca. defensive errors, man united with out some starters, no one is trying to score on each other. united wins the title with a tie and barca won the title with a tie. Whats up with big team doing favors to relegated teams?

  20. no its the goalkeeper fault. instead of letting the ball get out of the pitch that hernadez would have never reach he goes for hernadez instead of letting the ball get out.

  21. Someone, mainly Hoilett’s dad/agent, needs to tell him he isn’t eligible for the USA. Hoillet’s dad has even said he isn’t eligible, time to tell Junior.
