Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

Between championship and playoff showdowns and other matchups with big implications, Sunday's slate has something for everybody.

Jonathan Spector's West Ham seeks a win against Wigan in a matchup of two desperate teams currently on the bottom of England's drop zone, while Liverpool and Tottenham meet in a match that will almost certainly decide which team qualifies for the UEFA Europa League next season. Elsewhere in Europe, Oguchi Onyewu can end his loan to FC Twente with a league title as his side travels to Amsterdam to take on Ajax in a de facto championship game on the final day of the Eredivisie season.

If you're more a fan of the Mexican and South American games, you won't want to miss the liguilla semifinals or the Sao Paulo state title game between Brazilian rivals Santos and Corinthians.

Those are just some of the highlights of an action-packed schedule. If you will be watching any of Sunday's games, please feel free to share any thoughts opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below. Enjoy the action (TV schedule is after the jump):

  1. That is 6 CL games….compared to 38 EPL games. Not sure how being challenged weak in and weak out is somehow a lesser experience?

  2. I beg to differ from your somewhat sunnier outlook. I’m looking at the top leagues in Europe (and no, leagues in Scotland and Belgium don’t qualify): Spector officially down; Hahnemann and Jones still could go down; Friedel, Guzan and Bradley are 6 points clear, not exactly the safest end to the season; Bradley’s other team M’Gladbach is in the relegation playoff in Germany, and Jones’s recent team Schalke finished a slim 4 points above the relegation playoff.

  3. Thanks for the info on Gooch. There’s not question that guy is a hard worker so maybe with a little rest he can get back to where he used to be.
