Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

It is Judgment Day in the English Premier League, and while the Rapture Hoax came and went without a ripple, there will be two Premier League teams that will see their time in the EPL ended.

Wolverhampton and Blackburn face off in a battle of teams looking to avoid relegation, while Birmingham City will try to take points from its trip to Tottenham to avoid the drop as well.

It isn't just relegation on the line today. Manchester City can lock up third place in the Premier League, and the automatic Champions League berth that comes with it, with a win today, while Arsenal will be hoping to knock off Fulham and have City slip up to jump back into third place.

The action today isn't just limited to the Premier League, either, as Real Salt Lake and FC Dallas are set to do battle in a key Western Conference clash in MLS, and Pumas and Morelia play the final leg of the Mexican Clausura championship after drawing, 1-1, earlier in the week.

If you will be watching today's action, please feel free to share your own thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

  1. I think Cortez was invaded by the soul of Ronaldo on that Goal. He is not that talented. Also, the 5 defenders he over came were playing half hearted.

  2. Gattuso has 7 career assists for the Azzurri. I like that you did the research though. Gattuso is a legend so I have to correct the stats.

  3. Bedoya had a hand in all three goals his club scored today. He nodded in the third is what i heard. I wouldn’t be surprised if he moved to a larger league this summer, like the Dutch Eredivisie.

  4. I think if the MLS wants to add more teams, at some point they should create an MLS 1 and MLS 2 format. Make the franchise fee lower for the lower division and eventually introduce promotion/relegation.

  5. I’m afraid that is not quite how “plagiarism” and “citations” work. Clearly you are just making stuff up…and are trolling to defend it.

  6. So, Krugman says people shouldn’t feed the Trolls, but sometimes I cannot resist. I went to espn.com (I’m sure foxsoccer is just as authoritative) to try to verify Whitehardlane’s assertion that Bradley is the worst midfielder in the international game. I didn’t try to find someone worse because providing an example of some Faroe Islands nobody would only re-inforce the lunacy. Instead, I worked on the assumption that not every midfield position is tactically identical, and looked for some okay players who also seem to have defensive duties.

Here is a list, with name, international appearances, and assists, as reported by espn:

    Bradley, 32 appearancess, 0 assists
    Seedorf, 28 appearances, 1 assist
    DeJong, 44 appearances, 0 asssists
    Gattuso, 49 appearances, 0 assists.

    What a bunch of losers . . .

  7. Ives: Can you please ban this troll already? He obviously has no knoledge of soccer and is seems to have below average intelligence, which is a dangerous combination on a site like this.

  8. Alright, go ahead and tell us how that Jones assist simultaneously proves that ‘Lazy-Out-the-Door’ is lucky and actually sucks. And while you’re at it, enjoy the Europa League next year.

  9. You have to admit that without those corporate stooges there would have been no league in the first place. It only makes sense they’d want to protect their investment.

Relegation/Promotion is a great concept and adds a lot of thrill to the game but it wouldn’t work yet in the US with the mild interest from the general sports fan. Furthermore there isn’t a strong and viable second division in place that would properly support relegation.

It might come around someday but that day isn’t yet.

  10. So what’s this I hear about Blackpool and Birmingham qualify for Europe?

Bpool off the fair play standings and Birmingham with their CC win.

  11. I hope the corporate prostitute Don Garber was watching this morning…tell me , Don, about franchises, corporate profits, single entity, playoffs, conferences…tell me!

Relegation battles in Europe are second to none when it comes to drama.

Why do we need to “americanize” and zombify everything? Like in NFL, NHL, etc., where they tell you how to cheer, when to cheer, how loud to cheer…disgusting!!!

Donnie: promo/relegation is the ONLY way. I have heard the logistics and market arguments against. I am still not convinced. You just want to make sure you bent over to the corporate stooges who, on their end, want to keep all the profit in the family. Shame!

  12. This is seriously one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read. And I quote :
“D: I just gave you the citation, it’s from me, prove otherwise and I’ll be the first to post otherwise.”

You do understand that this isn’t a citation, right? A citation, in this case, would involve a real, factual statistic from a reputable statistics gathering agency. Are you in middle school?
And second, to make a claim that involves statistics, it’s actually up to YOU to prove that those statistics are right.
And seriously, are you in middle school?

  13. I had to leave for work just when Blackpool made it 2-1 and I thought they could pull it off… by the time I got to work they were losing 4-2. So disappointing.

  14. If Bradley hadn’t scored against Slovenia, the US would have lost that game– so instead of 1 pt each it would’ve been 0 for US and 3 for Slovenia. So subtract 1 pt from the US’s final standings, and add 2 to Slovenia’s, that would’ve made it Slovenia 6 pts, England 5 pts, US 4 pts.

  15. If I weren’t such a Fulham fan, I would definitely find Gera’s red card, which ended Fulham’s Europa League aspirations, hilarious. The football gods are a cruel lot.
