Ronaldo’s Brazil send-off match: The Highlights

Brazilian legend Ronaldo suited up for the Selecao one final time on Tuesday, making a 15 minute cameo (and missing a couple of golden chances) at the end of the first half of Brazil's 1-0 victory over Romania in a friendly in Sao Paulo (skip to the 4:00 mark for Ronaldo's entrance):

  1. Yes, Ronaldo is portly now because of a thyroid condition and is a shell of his former self, um maybe that’s why he is retiring?? Before “Gornaldo” and “Fofomeno” he was maybe the greatest striker ever.

Nobody has scored more goals than him in world cup play. On the highest stage he delivered again and again.
Go back to the tapes of Ronaldo at Barcelona and from the late 90s, early 2000s before he tore up his knee multiple times…unbelievable. He blew away defenses like Messi does nowadays. I remember one where he literally took the ball at midfield and dribbled 5 guys before scoring.

And the story of Ronaldo blowing it in the 1998 world cup final (depending on what story you read, he had a panic attack before the final), then tearing up his knee at Inter, not knowing if he would make it back for 2002, and then scoring eight goals – including the one that gave them a World Cup title – is a fantastic redemption story.

  2. It’s so funny when thin people think it is so easy to lose weight. Makes it so obvious how much of a jacka** they really are.

  4. So there you are, Ronaldo. You look like a bucket of lard on a bad day. You baby gorilla. Why don’t you work in a zoo, and stop bothering people? Got a call yesterday from Baskin Robbins. They said that they’re down to only five flavors. You’re swelling up as I talk to you….

  5. his weight is fairly funny… But my aunt actually had a version of his disease called Cushings, where little benign growths on the pituitary put the thyroid into overdrive, she literally turned into a pumpkin, almost completely round. He looks like he’s going that way. She had five brain surgeries before having to just completely remove the pituitary, hopefully he doesn’t have to do that too

  6. it’s unbelievable what people are posting.

First of all Ronaldo was never “thin” as in Neymar or Kaka…ever! It’s not his body type! Second he suffers from hypothyrodism!!! Ronaldo is arguably the greatest Brazilian player ever (yes including Pele), a guy who in soccer is equivalent to Michael Jordan. If he wants to eat and lounge the rest of his life, SO WHAT?

Let’s wait an see how Onyewu looks at 34!

  7. I mean, the dude hasn’t been away from the game that long and he’s already that big? What the hell has he been doing? A feeding tube pumping bacon directly into his stomach while catching up on all the episodes of Lost he missed?

He was a great player, but for chrissakes man, try to make it to 50!

  8. +1. People need to cool it with the fat comments. The man is a legend, and arguably the greatest striker of all time. He was truly the scariest and most dangerous player to play against as an opposing centerback. He’s earned the right to miss those chances, because he has scored so many memorable ones in his career. I will truly miss watching the Phenomenon.

  10. Even with his weight problems and rust, their is somethign about him that is still great. He knows where to freaking be. in only a few mins he got more opportunities to score than anyone. This is a quality that only legends like Ronaldo have, they just know how to get chances on goal, wether they score or not.

  11. yeah there has been a remarkable explosion in these types of conditions of the last 25 years. My favorite though is “genetics did it.” Well yes, your genes are probably conformed to make it easy to gain weight, as are most peoples, but that cheeseburger and soda aren’t helping anything.

  12. Ronaldo has a thyroid condition that is obviously impacting his health (it was more clear watching the whole match how much he labored even when he wasn’t playing). So the fat jokes are a little uninformed at least.

  13. Where did all of Brazil’s established attacking talent disappear to???
Look at theCopa squad- there’s Robinho and Elano (who isnt that good) and a bunch of kids and fringe players. No Ronaldo or Kaka or Ronaldinho or Adriano or Luis Fabiano. All the established talent in their prime on Brazil is in defense.

  14. I love the real Ronaldo. But I don’t know who that fat one impersonating him was. He missed goals a 13 year old with braces could make.
