SBI MLS Best XI: Week 13

The past week in MLS was an outstanding one for amazing goals, and also a stellar week for standout forwards.

There were so many of them, in fact, that we had to find a way to squeeze the four best onto this week's SBI MLS Best XI.

How could you really choose from Eric Hassli and his stunning goals, to Alan Gordon's clutch brace, to Steven Lenhart hat-trick-plus-assist masterpiece, to Thierry Henry carrying an understrength and battered New York Red Bulls team to victory?

We didn't, choosing instead to honor all four.

So who else made this week's SBI MLS Best XI? Here are our selections:

Honorable Mention: Greg Sutton, Matt Pickens, Yamith Cuesta, Geoff Cameron, Julius James, Chris Tierney, Brek Shea, Simon Dawkins, Mauro Rosales, Sam Cronin.

  1. Alonso helped provide two goals for the opponents while only scoring one for his own team. That’s a net of -1. Not worthy of making the Best 11.

  3. How about honorable mention to Hartman for his great D against Zusi and Sassano? Shea scored but otherwise was invisible like the rest of his teammates.

  4. I love Alonso but he doesn’t deserve best of anything last week. Besides the two gaffes he gave the ball away too much. Including the opening kickoff where he kicked it to Vancouver like he was in a U-7 game.

  5. It was definitly lucky and I doubt that he could repeat it 1 out of 100 tries. In my mind that doesn’t take away anything from it since he was clearly going for goal.

  6. One thing I’ll never understand fully about Alonso is that he is ALWAYS punished for not playing perfectly. It’s rare that he makes a mistake and the other team doesn’t put the ball in the net. He typically plays a nearly flawless game. I felt he did VERY well in the game against Vancouver… just his two mistakes cost the team dearly.

Also, am I the only one that thinks Hassli’s goal was more luck than skill? Seriously. The top strikers in the world don’t attempt that kind of shot because they know there is more luck than skill to it. Yes, it was amazing, but I seriously doubt Hassli could repeat that shot 1 out of 50 tries.

  7. I guess I don’t see how its relevent if Cuesta made the MLSnet best 11. Wouldn’t having multiple best 11s be kinda pointless if they were identical? 😀

  8. I thought that that was one of alonso’s worst games of the season. He gave upt he ball in dangerous places all night long and it lead to a number of oppertunities including the Hassli wonder strike. He also committed the foul on Vancouver’s PK. If I was going to put a sounder on the best 11 it would have been Rosales.

  9. Clearly Alonso gets the nod for giving up the turnover to Hassli so he could make that equalizing golazo while he himself just scored the would-be GWG goal after being down 0-1 for the entire match with 10 minutes to go. Right?

  10. Wasn’t it Alonso’s wank that led to Hassli’s goal? Surely that gaffe alone is enough to warrant an Honorable Mention at most – this from a guy that didn’t see the match 😉
