Although his team didn't come out ahead, D.C. United forward Blake Brettschneider still turned in another impressive performance to capture SBI MLS Rookie of the Week honors.
Brettschneider scored his first league goal, taking a pass at the top of the area, turning and firing with his left foot to beat San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch and level the score at 2-2 in the first half on Saturday. Even though San Jose went on to win, 4-2, Brettschneider, a Supplemental Draft pick, continued his strong rookie season. In addition to his tally against San Jose, he's also scored in a friendly against Ajax and assisted on two goals in D.C's win at Portland on May 29.
Other rookies who had notable Week 13 performances include Sporting Kansas City's C.J. Sapong and Philadelphia's Michael Farfan.
What did you think of Brettschneider's performance? Which rookie stood out the most for you this past week?

he was at the combine
he was is the combine
Actually, Wolff is keeping Davies on the bench. That, plus a hamstring injury. Brettschneider is keeping Ngwenya on the bench.
I think Brettschneider has a real future in this league. He reminds me of John Wolnieac (sp?) with his play thus far. Very pleased with his work rate, intelligence, and decent finishing.
Has Ampai @ San Jose won this yet? He always seems to get edged out week after week, but he’s claimed a starting spot for a resurgent Quakes and has been an offensive engine. He has a strong case for Rookie of the Month.
Why would you think he was a rookie? He was signed to a professional contract years ago in Britain by Spurs, than loaned to Leyton Orient. San Jose is his third professional club.
Brettschneider was picked in the SUPPLEMENTAL draft (meaning, the draft that comes after the superdraft). I believe he wasn’t invited to the combine and real bargains can be found that way (b/c MLS scouting is so hit or miss, some good players…Bobby Boswell is a great example–don’t get invited to the combine and then come in as rookies, start and make an impact).
He wasn’t picked in the draft I think.
Is Simon Dawkins considered a rookie?
As a DC fan I have been nothing but impressed. I mean he’s keeping Charlie on the bench with his play. At first, I was worried we overstepped knowing we could have got Bruin, but Brettschneider has done everything to prove me wrong in the last couple of weeks.
The kid looks solid!
