USA vs. Spain: The Pre-Game Tailgate

The U.S. men's national team takes on World Cup champions Spain today at Gillette Stadium (4:30pm, ESPN2) in a match that could be a sellout.

The Spaniards will be looking for a measure of revenge for their 2009 Confederations Cup semifinal loss to the United States. The Americans will be using the match as a final tune-up before the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which they kick off against Canada on Tuesday.

There is already big news on the U.S. team front, with Landon Donovan set to miss the match due to illness. Carlos Bocanegra is also missing the match, though it appears he's just being rested for Tuesday's match. Freddy Adu and Jonathan Bornstein also didn't make today's game-day roster.

Let this be your place for all pre-game discussions as we draw closer to today's big friendly. Feel free to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below. We will have a pre-game live chat, as well as our regular Match Day Commentary, so be sure to stick with SBI throughout the day.

  1. Makes more sense to use them as subs as you can see where we are at and where we need the help…not to mention Bradley can gauge how some of these young guys handle a team like Spain in a starting role….bigg difference for them than coming on as subs…we already know how Duece etc. can handle Spain as starters…

  2. I understand. I totally get that. All I’m saying is what’s the difference between starting and playing 45 min, or coming in as a sub in the 2nd half and playing about the same amount of time from a fitness standpoint

  3. We’re going to get killed with the lineup Ives posted to twitter. Man. This is going to hurt.

  4. You never know…young guys get a chance to show their stuff…it sure helped Stu Holden in 2009 and Bradley needs to see who he can count on as subs for the Gold Cup…chance for guys to step up…

  5. Winning the Gold Cup is the priority to get the Confed. Cup in Brazil in 2013…

They will play in the second half…

Bottom line is this is a meaningless game…

  6. I understand not dressing Donovan or Boca and not starting Deuce, Dolo or Bradley with the Canada game in 3 days, but USSF should give fans their money’s worth. I’d be a little pissed if I had tix to this. What’s wrong with giving Deuce, Dolo, Boca and Bradley the start and 45 min or less of action?

  7. Looks like Bradley is looking to the Gold Cup with this lineup….many of the regulars getting a reat (i.e Deuce, Boca etc)…Spain looks to play many o their back-ups too…..

I’m good with this as it makes sense…Gold Cup is the priority and allot of these guys are tired after logn seasons in Europe…

Howard the Captain tonight on his home turf as a NJ boy….

  8. AMEN!

All the haters say what you want, we beat this team in South Africa 2-0.

Not only did we put up 2 on them, we held their supermen to 0 goals. Hate all you want, we beat this team when it counted.

  9. No Dempsey, Donovan, Bocanegra, or Cherundolo? Glad they are resting up, but mehhh. Not gonna be that great of a game

  10. On a side note, I was wearing my USMNT Jersey out shopping today and an older man asked me if I was a scuba diver because I was wearing the divers flag.

  11. Download Chrome or Firefox. If you get Firefox download an add-on called Ad Block Plus. I’m sure Chrome has the same thing or something similar. I never ever see any ads on Ives site.

Don’t be a fool and use Internet Explorer.

  12. I don’t know what is worse, LD missing LD this this game, or the $%^&ing Groupon popup infesting this site.

  13. Does anyone else think it’s a bit over-ambitious / risky to play the no. 1 team in the world just two days before the start of the Gold Cup? Hopefully the squad’s confidence won’t be completely destroyed this afternoon.

Speaking of shattered confidence, thinking back to the last Gold Cup, I still can’t comprehend how you allow your fiercest rival to score 5 second-half goals in a Final. It’s remarkable that Bob Bradley wasn’t immediately sh!tcanned after that debacle.

  14. Living in the LA area myself, I suspect we have an El Tri troll here…it will be fun watching the USA ‘A’ team dismantle Mexico….I’m looking forward to that..:)

  15. Its a friendly and still will be fun to watch…yeah it would be great to win however, the Gold Cup is priority #1 this summer…not worth melting down over…:)

  16. Brazil vs Holland on Telefutura if you all want a game to hold you over till USA vs Spain.

  17. At work myself there should be a number of websites where you can stream the game live…….

  18. Hope our boys can put together a better game than vs Paraguay. Otherwise I hope Spain hands their asses to them and we can go into the Gold Cup with a sense of urgency and humility!

    That being said GO USA!!!!!!

  19. Dang it! I have to work at 3:30 today…I hate my job…I’m going to record the game, so nobody tell me who wins, ok?

  20. I like that Borntein is not dressed. This is Lichaj’s chance to shine at the left back position. I would like to see how Edu, and Jones do, and see how the midfield does without Bradley.

  21. LosAngeles— given your screen name and comments I assume you are from perhaps a neighbor to or south? Very classy…..

  22. my expectations/excitement for this game just went down 90% knowing that Donovan won’t be playing…damnit donovan! why u getting sick on us!?

  23. Howard
    Cherundolo—Onyewu—Ream—Spector
    Bradley—Jones—Edu
    Dempsey—Alidore—Agudelo

  24. Since we are guaranteed to have a right footed left back and no Donovan, I think Bob goes with a 4-2-3-1

  25. Wow not good on Landon….however, would rather have him healthy for the Gold Cup matches…want the Confederations Cup again in 2013 in Brazil….

So we know the 18 man roster than as this knocks it down from 22 to 18….
