Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

Thierry Henry 061011 (ISIPhotos.com)

Thierry Henry will face the club that made him a worldwide start today as Henry and the New York Red Bulls take on Arsenal in the final match of the Emirates Cup.

The Red Bulls scored a surprising victory over Paris St. Germain in their opening match on Saturday, but will face a much stiffer test against the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium.

If you prefer European soccer, then Inter Milan vs. Manchester City will be interesting to say the least, While the Under-20 World Cup rages on. I don't know if he's going or not.

MLS has a game on the slate, with FC Dallas looking to topple Chivas USA.

If you will be watching today's action, please feel free to follow along here, and as always, share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

  2. Ref is a bit of a homer as well. I need to check OPTA stats for Marquez pass completion percentage=awful and let Van Persie go to score.

  3. I don’t think anyone disagrees with your point about MLS having a ways to go in competing with top tier leagues globally in terms of player quality, tactical acumen, etc. However, not sure that results and play this summer v. Euro clubs have been entirely one sided (not that you’re asserting that). E.g., DCU did take an offensive posture, and executed well for stretches, against Everton. NYRB beat PSG yesterday, which preseason or not IMO is meaningful since both sides are professional squads. All that said, I hope we see more MLS sides consistently approach international competitions and friendlies like RSL did in CONCACAF champs league.

  4. yeah….while arsenal are a superior team, jet lag and two games in two days doesn’t help anyone. albright and richards are terrible regardless of jet lag and two games in two days. does richards have anything besides being slightly faster than the average person?

  5. Who is the idiot who is the color commentator?? The play-by-play asks him “Where do you think RBNY would fall in England?? (Premier League/Championship/etc) The color commentator states, “Dont know, haven’t really thought about it. Definitely not Premier League”

Look, I know they don’t belong in the Premier League, but the complete lack of any involvement from this guy is breathtaking. It almost makes me wish that Ray Hudson was calling this match.

Find out who this guy is so we can send him a s&*t-filled haggis

  6. yes, but how about now? looking better for sure. NY’s awe of Arsenal seems gone finally, but who knows what that will translate into on the field

and i sure hope they don’t score off of that weak whistle on the edge of the 18 there. yuck

  7. Personally I never had any delusions of grandeur regarding MLS and can recognize your point of view. However, against PSG Agudelo played a very nice pass to Lindpere for the 1-o win just the other day.
It was a solid goal and a strong performance by NY

  8. These past few months have really exposed the level of MLS. I understand why our players rather struggle and play in 2nd or 3rd division leagues than return to MLS. Its not only the results (which by the way is massive) but just the knowledge of the game in general. We can’t put anything together pass the half way line, a problem we have even at the National team level. During FA Cups these championship and 1st divsion teams put up a fight like no other, defeating EPL giants, going far up the ladder but not even one MLS team put up a good showing…not one. We defend all day, can’t put more than 4 passes together, hard touches on the ball….I know we are improving as a league and all but its funny when people dog players in the lower English and Germany leagues (Taylor, Gatt, Grella etc) yet talk about MLS players(the wondos, the Agudelos, the Mccarthys) it just makes you wonder……

  9. Red bulls look slow, timid and inept–quite a contrast to yesterday’s game against PSG. Long balls to Henry from Marquez and Ream have been way off target. Lindpere badly needed to bring ball through the midfield and link up with Henry.

  10. think I saw the counter there a couple of times but NY stepped on the ball to …possess it? counter hard when Arsenal ends up with 4-5 guys up top pushing the attack and not behind the ball…GO!

  11. I need to vent somewhere about how the color commentator for this Arsenal – Red Bulls game is a condescending prick. More so than the average British person who doesn’t know anything about other culture’s football.

  12. It’s like McCarty isn’t even in the game. He is anonymous.

I feel bad for Henry. He probably won’t even get a goal scoring chance because he won’t get any service. Not to hate on NY but their tactics before the Van Persie goal looked like Inter Milan circa Mourinho versus Barcelona.

  13. RvP goal was coming for a while now. So far, RBNY lacking off the ball movement when they do have it and sort of playing zone D. Hoping they raise their level in 2H.

  14. Gervinho looks like a fantastic purchase. Also, NY midfield getting outclassed by Arsenal.. But i guess that’s expected.

  15. It would be on match day live because it is being broadcasted on FSC. All national broadcasts are blocked when live. They become available in archive 2 days later.

  16. If you mean NYRB v Arsenal… only link I could find is through “match day live” at mlssoccer.net but comes with a $59.99 sign up fee.

  17. I agree. Having all the games in the evening can lead to some hard choices when watching Direct Kick. However I see how they are trying to avoid the summer heat of the day.
