When Atlantic Cup rivals D.C. United and the New York Red Bulls made a trade on Saturday, D.C. sent a 2011 international roster slot to New York for "future considerations."

The specifics of those considerations have been sorted out.

The Red Bulls sent second-year midfielder Austin Da Luz to United to complete the trade. Da Luz appeared seven times for New York this season, started four games and notched a goal and an assist. He battled through injuries during his rookie season before starting to make an impact in his second MLS campaign. As a left-sided midfielder, Da Luz, a first-round pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, offers depth behind Chris Pontius while also giving coach Ben Olsen the flexibility to push Pontius forward.

The trade is the second between the two teams in a three-week span, as New York sent Dwayne De Rosario to D.C. for Dax McCarty at the end of June.

What do you think of the deal?

  1. I think that Maka is kidding Soler makes a player trade or personnel move every week which is not a good thing.

  2. This really isn’t a trade of Da Luz for an international slot. It’s about DeRo and Da Luz for Dax McCarty and an international spot and (by moving DeRo) some cap room. Straight up, it’s an unbelievable stupid deal. But it’s like NBA teams who trade a proven starter for a 2nd round pick–on it’s face it’s dumb but it’s really more about roster space and cap room. I could be wrong but I think the Anelka rumors would be a wildly stupid move. NYRB needed to upgrade at GK (done) and add a defender. That defender needs to be a priority. Adding a big name striker at this point is like being distracted by a shiny object–it’s losing focus on what’s important for the team and what matters most.

  3. Didn’t see Austin play much this year, because he didn’t. When he did play he showed good skill but very low energy.

  4. This “trade” is a travesty. Basically, the Red Bulls just traded away their midfield bench depth for the loan of an international slot until the end of December. What sense does this make? RBNY could have easily bought out Robinson, Nielsen, or Rooney to get the international slot, since none of them see the field anyway. I feel like I’m watching the MetroStars all over again.

  5. as a big time NY fan I am bummed to see Da Luz go….he showed quite a bit a promise the chances he did get to play….he will be a very good midfielder in this league, great touch on the ball, great passing abilities. good luck Austin.

  6. Surf around the net.

There’s more than one source with that speculation. Nothing wrong with acknowledging a little smoke, in the hopes that a fire soon follows.

  7. Because our team was so deep already. Proven by the fact that Hans Backe doesn’t trust any of our substitutes and keeps the same line-ups out for the whole 90 minutes of every game. Sure, let’s ship out a kid who impressed during the Gold Cup absences to a rival team.

  8. Got to love Erik Soler tossing away the future of the red bulls. Tchani and now Da Luz, Hes going all out this year and NY still wont win the playoffs or the supporters shield. How funny would it be if DC knocked them out of the postseason? I really hope they do, i would laugh so hard. Maybe after this season the Red Bulls will be sold so they can change their name back.

  9. if Anelka were to be let out of his 1 year left at Chelsea and able to move to MLS on a free transfer, if his salary is below a certain amount would he be a non-DP in an international spot?

  10. Well — I guess that depends on what you define as the playoffs. With the new play-in game, the East ought to grab at least one of the four wild-card spots.

  11. buzzz. wrong. the correct answer is that Canadian players without a green card DO count as an international spot for US based teams.

however, US players (or those with a greencard/asylum status) do not count as international players for the two (soon to be 3) Canadian teams. this started this season.

the reason a Canadian player cannot count “as a domestic player” is because US labor law prohibits treating any non-US/greencard citizen differently from any other in hiring/employment practices. an employer may have practices that favour US Citizens/Green Card Holders/US Asulym/etc over those who do not hold this status but an employer MAY NOT have practices that favour one nationality of non-US citizen (or green card holder, etc) over another.

  12. Fact: The IF was generous

Fact: Getting into the playoffs if you are an Eastern Conference team is essentially the art of making the top three, because of the strength in the Western Conference. The Union and the Red Bulls are probably going to pick up two. We needed an extra edge to put us above the pack. De Ro and depth? Thanks.

  13. Well no, it’s not a ridiculous statement. He’s so good at serving crosses and passes with his left foot that it makes him a player worthy of minutes in MLS, despite the fact that he’s slow and isn’t going to win you much possession. He has some skill. Depending on the matchups and the game situation, he can definitely be a useful player. And it’s pretty much solely by virtue of that “sweet left boot”.

  14. Nicolas Anelka will be signing with RB by the end of today or tomorrow. Garber made RB trade away a top prospect to DC instead of a 3rd round draft pick in agreement to allow Anelka to come in. He won’t be an official DP this year, but next year he will. A 4th DP will be implemented next season as well as a homegrown DP.

  15. Love this trade, I like Da Luz since he’s a Lonestars product but hate the bulls. No more conflict of interest. And no I don’t hate DC as much as I hate the bulls.

  16. IF…and even then, simply making the playoffs is something 84.9% of the clubs in MLS do on a yearly basis.

    Fact. It’s science.

Fact. It’s not really a big deal.

  17. Well that’s just a ridiculous statement. ALL other aspects of his game can be forgiven cause he’s got a sweet left boot?

  18. I liked Da Luz, so I guess we’ll have to wait and see what they get for that slot, assuming it isn’t being used for Rost. Nielsen had better be ready to play as the cupboard is bare on the left side of the field. Hope Miller and Lindpere remain healthy…

  19. Nooooo! Man, da Luz’s left foot is unbelievable. All of his other flaws can be forgiven for that alone. Dammit. This sucks. They better do something amazing with that slot.

  20. Man, Red Bulls definitely have a move in mind, and DC is taking advantage. Honestly, if I was Soler, I’d consider making DC squirm on the lack of depth hook. Thanks for letting my team off it, and for De Ro. If/when we make the playoffs, we’ll know who to thank.

  21. I have to agree with the people saying that we need to bring in a high profile European player now. Da Luz might not have been one of our best players, but he was definately an up and coming player. Personally I think we are heading in the wrong direction, hopefully we’ll sort it all out soon!

  22. To the people saying they hope this leads to a big DP signing, it would have to wait till the offseason. We already have our max 3 DP’s. And what I don’t get is why we needed another international slot? Wouldn’t we have regained one, once we traded DeRo?

  23. Seems pretty obvious NYRB is waging all their investment into the present and mortgaging off the future in some respects.

That said, can we PLEASE get some transparency on how many International slots NYRB currently has? I feel like that major detail gets labeled as minor in these reports by MLS.

Can the SBI staff dig up this and report the specific numbers?

  24. I tell you if it works for this secret I use to build my team, I call it my “Winning Fantasy Football” it will work in real life! “Haters gonna hate” is the saying, no?

  25. Could be we needed the slot for Rost.

I am kind of annoyed, but then again Hans Backe doesn’t use all of his substitutions anyway, so I guess he really doesn’t see the need of having anyone on the bench (which annoys me a whole lot more).

I’m really beginning to wonder if this isn’t just getting rid of any player who could possibly take away time from Ballouchy.

  26. The only way this makes sense now is if we get a big name European player soon. We are shooting for MLS Cup THIS year!

  27. Yeah getting rid of a guy who has played 3 games in his first 2 years in the league is a reason to be pissed with management…nope.
