Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

It was a topsy-turvy weekend for the Americans Abroad contingent, and no player may have illustrated that more than Maurice Edu.

Having missed out on last week's U.S. men's national team friendly against Mexico with an injury, Edu recovered enough to earn a start in Rangers' 2-0 win against Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Edu scored the insurance goal in the game, but was sent off with a second booking minutes later.

Zak Whitbread had one of the more positive outings, starting and playing 71 minutes in Norwich City's season opening 1-1 draw versus Wigan Athletic. Whitbread earning the start in Norwich City's Premier League season opener is likely to give him confidence as he looks to prove that he's capable of playing at that level.

Oguchi Onyewu was on the other end of the spectrum, failing to get on the gameday roster for Sporting CP in its season opener against Olhanense. Sporting CP tied Olhanense, 1-1.

  1. There is always going to be a place for bulk (or as I prefer to call it size), strength and speed in any team.

And those things are not a “skill set” they are physical characteristics.

How well would we have done against Mexico the other day for example, without speed?

Would you like Robbie Rogers slower? Or Tim Howard to be smaller, shorter and weaker?
