Loyd replaces Chandler on USMNT roster

FC Dallas defender Zach Loyd has been called into the U.S. national team to replace Timmy Chandler, who suffered an injury in training and is working his way back to full fitness ahead of the upcoming Bundesliga season, according to a U.S. Soccer press release.

Loyd, who was part of the national team's January camp and appeared in a friendly against Chile, has been a consistent contributor along FC Dallas' back line and will be an option at either fullback position for new U.S. manager Jurgen Klinsmann.

What do you think of this development? Disappointed Chandler won't get to play against Mexico?

  1. If there was ever a meaningless friendly this one would be it. So I have no beef with Nuremberg blocking this (if in fact they did). This is a meaningless friendly between two heated rivals, one of which was just embarrassed in a meaningful game a few weeks ago – yup, I’m no mathematician but the risk of injury in a game like this is very high. So if I have a key young player (who I have great designs for in the upcoming season) a few weeks from the start of our season, why the heck would I even consider risking him/her for a game like this?

We’ll see Timmy when it matters. I can wait. I’ve got no beef.

  3. Yes. I’m aware of the FIFA rule about being capped in a WC qualifier or a FIFA sanctioned tournment. With that said I think it would have made alot of people feel better about his committment if he’d played this friendly. Like I said, hopefully his reasons for missing the last 2 call ups legitimate and he commits in the future.

  4. * sorry mike, I initially read “tossed” for “toasted”…regardless the my argument and points still apply and stand.

  5. I’m starting to think Chandler is a mythical creature who can charge up and down the wing, sending in devastating crosses of international caliber. Sight. Lloyd’s a solid call up.

  6. Why is that, mike? Why do you think he’ll get tossed? What empirical evidence do you have that suggests that Loyd will get tossed if he plays next week?

I remember a few cycles ago, when MLS was younger and one could make a clear case for it’s lack in many, many things – yup, back then when a young Landon Donovan and DMB answered the call, stepped up and burned some of Mexico’s greats and Portugal and…well we get the point. Back then we were good with that because we did not have many players that played overseas. So we took what we got and believed in them and they fed off of our belief and delivered.

Now we have guys that are abroad and are making names for themselves and that is awesome! I love it! But it seems, to me at least, that lately if we call dude A from MLS in place of dude B who plays in [insert Euro league here] that it’s a bad call or we’ll somehow be “lucky” not to get embarrassed. We kill the drive and confidence of these young guys before they even get their fair shot. We slaughter them on blog boards because of where they play. I really resent that.

Whose to say we’re not going to find the next best thing from right here under our noses in lowly MLS? You’ll never know if you don’t try. Like I said with BB before and for Klinsi now, these guys know what they are doing and know why they compose their call-up lists a certain way.

Even if we beat Mexico 10-0 next week it means exactly d**k! They already trounced us in a game that really mattered. Water under the bridge. USSF stepped up and made the change – we learned – late but we learned. We know and appreciate our rival better now and are trying to figure out how to match, if not best them, right now as we search for/develop our young stars of tomorrow.

Search high-search low, but I have no issue with Loyd, or George John or any of the guys in MLS who show real growth, promise and hunger to impress and wear the shirt. I respect them and what they bring to the table, just like I do our foreign based guys.

  7. Bummer for Chandler. It’s starting to look like Nuremberg is being obstructionist with him, for whatever reason.

Interested in Loyd. Klinsi isn’t adverse to using inverted fullbacks (see Lahm for the Germans). So this very well may be his solution to the eternal LB quandry.

  8. Loyd regularly heads deep into the mid to help push the attack. He is a very right footed player to the point that costs us an attempt occasionally. Like many others on this squad he is young and has a ways to go. That being said, he’s made huge improvements over the last couple years.

He is RB, the way FCD plays, Brek switches sides with Jackson a lot. Don’t be surprised if suddenly Shea shows up on the other side of your screen if he gets some playing time.

  9. On a serious note tho, I’m very surprised with the buddle call up. He barely plays for inglostadt 04. Played 7 mins today. I think if we wanted to call in an older forward (30 year old range like buddle), gomez would have been more appropriate. He goes 90 consistently for his club. Another off topic note – kljestan and mix scored this afternoon 🙂

  10. Maybe rico will get hurt too and mix will get called up. Oh and let’s get george john in there too so we can see him vs mexico so either the fanboys or haters can get proven right/wrong

  11. This is a valid point. Until he is capped in a meaningful FIFA game, he is free to change allegiances. He maybe validly injured for the Mexico friendly and he may have legitimately been fatigued for the Gold Cup. I guess we’ll see what happens the next time he is called up. It not like the first time an athlete, particularly soccer players have ever change their minds.

  12. Even though Chandler is missing, I’m glad Klinsmann brought Loyd into the team. He played pretty well at left back against Chile. I think we move forward with Dolo and Chandler at RB and Lichaj and Loyd at LB. I don’t see Castillo panning out, he barely gets minutes for club.

  13. Loyd is naturally right sided and has yet to show much capability with the left foot. I think he’s a great prospect though.

  14. so is he naturally left footed? LB or CB or RB? Iv only watched him play a few times a didn’t remember.. i remember he did well to stop wingers when he payed LB vs. Chile but i don’t recall any advances into the attack or a cross..

  15. congrats to Loyd… but i wish people would stop ragging on injured Americans. Every single team has their injuries, just because the USMNT is the only one you’re hearing about doesn’t mean Americans are more injury prone or whatever you’re thinking. The American press are gonna talk about Americans more… duh. And with Chandler’s season starting up, getting healthy and fighting for a starting spot is much more important.

  16. Loyd is a solid call up. I’d be concerned about some fatigue since he’s played every minute recently for FC Dallas in the 100+ heat. Part of why I like this is the fact that he’s playing behind Brek a large part of their games. If Klinsy is planning on using Brek it would do well to have him running with a back behind him that he’s comfortable with.

A lot of people talk about Timmy’s pace, Zack is not pokey at all.

  17. hmmm kinda odd..working back from an injury… Klinsmann should have known right? or did his injury just happen yesterday.fatigue is the biggest BS excuse…. and you can look at one guy south of the border for that(Chicharito)…he has a WAY bigger challenge for a spot on a team @ ManU than Chandler does.Hes a hold out and those guys are not worth the USMNT time….

  18. People say he said he would play for Germany so there is no concern. Maybe he’s a man of his word. I heard an interview with Teal Bunbury in Canada where he stated unequivocally he would commit to Canada. It could not have been clearer. About four months later he committed to the USA. I don’t consider him a lock until I see him in a WC Qualifier. My hope is Klinsmann as coach will be a powerful draw.

  19. excuses already?

hes no Chandler. Chandlers speed on the flanks coulda been a game changer. Now well be luck if thsi guy doesnt get toasted.

  20. You people are nuts. Occam’s Razor. No Conspiracies. Chandler picked up a slight injury a week before his season starts. If I were in his position, I wouldn’t want to fly to the US to play in a friendly either.

    Take a deep breath.

  21. This is the first time an injury prevented him from being called up. He didn’t accept a Gold Cup call-up because of fatigue.

  22. There is no need to be parinoid about Nuremberg because this was a FIFA date, They like Chandler and him going to play in a national team friendly is not going to get him on the **** list so if Tim wanted to go he could go. I am way more parinoid that if Chandler puts in a really good season he will defect to Germany (who might not even use him long term but could cap him in a easy WC qualifying match and DQ from our pool forever)

  23. seems to me chandler always picks up little injuries near national team call ups…but then i could just be paranoid about Nuremberg

  24. I think this sounds like an incredibly bogus injury. Sounds like a club not wanting to release a player to play for his country. I’m not buying it until I see him miss games for Nurnberg.

  25. Congrats to Loyd

    the kid is a gamer.

Hopefully he is able to recover enough to put in a good showing if called upon next week. FCD has been playing a ridiculous amount of games in extreme conditions of late, and loyd had picked up a slight knock

  26. I thought loyd played LB…in which case, as long as it keeps Johnny Bornstien out, I’m good with this. Although I would have liked to see chandler again, he looked promising
