SBI MLS Player of the Week: Lamar Neagle

Already a hometown favorite among Seattle fans for status as a local product, Lamar Neagle boosted his cult hero status in the Emerald City with his hat-trick performance in the Sounders' 6-2 romp over Columbus on Saturday. He also earned SBI MLS Player of the Week honors in the process.

The speedy winger made the Crew's life miserable with a series of right-footed shots that beat Will Hesmer and sparked a rout few could have seen coming. Two long-range shots and a tidy back-post volley made up Neagle's first career hat-trick.

Neagle was the clear Player of the Week choice in a field that included some good candidates, including FC Dallas' Brek Shea, Chicago's Cory Gibbs and San Jose's Chris Wondolowski.

What did you think of Neagle's performance? Was there anybody else you thought merited consideration for this week's honors?

  1. It hasn’t been that long since Lamar fn Neagle was a term of derision and not endearment. It’s premature to call him a starter on The current side let alone say he’s beat out zakuani. He’s still behind mauro and Alvaro.

That said, I’m excited for his future. At every level Lamar scores goals. Put in a few more and maybe klinsmann will turn his head. Lamars better than Rogers at least

  2. Neagle does need to work on his first touch.. he’s not alone there. Rosales is Sounders MVP. James Riley gave an excellent effort.. And Jacqua is a giraffe!

  3. First touch is what the coaches say he has been working really hard on. Maybe by January camp he deserves a look. He has a good upside and I have seen his play and confidence improve each game.

  4. Neagle gets it done, he hustles, etc. but he isn’t some amazing technical talent in my book. Half of the time watching him you see his first touch or his passing let him down. He isn’t afraid to put the ball on target. If Montero had half of his hustle, he would be unstoppable.

  5. Can definitely see him at Camp Cupcake if he keeps this form. Great for a young kid who couldn’t make the original expansion MLS team 2 years ago.

  6. Sigi, do you notice a trend of all the guys being mentioned above ? Hint: Speed, they are fast, pace, whatever you call it in German.

From the Greatest Show on Turf through now, everyone else has realized that field turf was made for speed.

Also, Jaqua and Noonan are not fast.

  7. Neagle is one of my favorite players to watch in the MLS. His PP90 is just absurd.

He definitely deserves a call up from Klinsmann. He’s played well in International duty in the CCL.

  8. Forgot to mention cross on the OG. Contributed to 4 goals for the team. MONSTER day! His international time proved huge. Love watching this kid play. Plays hard and can nail some gorgeous shots (his 3rd on the game and the game winner against RSL).

Mauro should have been a candidate too. 1 goal 2 assists. Up to 3rd on the assist rankings with 9, totaling taking part in 16 goals, which is 2nd or 3rd. Gotta almost start not only considering him for Newcomer, but MVP of the league, guy has propelled this team and has been tearing the field up.

  9. I see him as a striking option up top and a super sub option on either wing. He definitely has a nose for the goal. And we are thin there.

But with Fucito hitting form, Neagle hitting form, and the potential of Ochoa, our striker options are getting much better.

  10. I’m interested to see how he fits in when Zak comes back. I think he has talent and he can obviously put the ball into the net. Zakuani is just a player with that special stuff and I don’t see Neagle usurping him from his position.
