Maurice Edu will have to wait a bit longer to meet new U.S. men's national team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann.

Edu was replaced by Robbie Rogers on the U.S. roster for the upcoming Mexico friendly after picking up a calf strain to his left leg in Rangers' friendly with Chelsea on Saturday. Rogers will add width to a U.S. midfield comprised of mostly central players.

The Columbus Crew midfielder is the second replacement player added to the roster, as Zach Loyd was called to fill in for Timmy Chandler on Friday.

Edu's next opportunity to play under Klinsmann will come in September, when the Americans face Belgium in a friendly in Europe.

What do you think of this development? Do you see Rogers making the gameday roster?

  1. Agree, Rogers has an assist and a 2009 Gold Cup goal. More than can be said for Torres, who everyone agrees has been screwed by Bob Bradlely even though Bradley took him to the World Cup while Rogers stayed home. I dont get why people trash Rogers and obviously the savior doesnt either as we can see by this call-up

  2. Seriously, Labrocca. You’re going to drop that on us….?

With ya on Davis and Cameron (who is jack of all trades, master of none) but Labrocca?

    That joke made me laugh.

  3. are you questioning Rangers being the best in SPL?

Otherwise, his assessment of the league quality is spot on. SPL is a joke and can definitely be compared to MLS in overall quality.

  4. Rogers does not have what it takes for the international level end of story. Not bashing just stating the truth he has never lived up to expectations.

  5. Now there are some names I haven’t heard in awhile.

Marcus Tracy is having chronic knee trouble in Denmark. He has played about 15 games in two years and none recently. If they call him up now then you will know we really are in trouble.

Jeremiah White was last seen in Poland and then tried out for the Union but as far as I know they did not pick him up. If you can find him maybe Klinsmann will call him up.

    Davies is hurt.

How about Mike Grella? Another frequent “DNP” American striker. Fifteen league appearances {not complete games}in two years. Cody Arnoux? Anton Peterlin?

What Beasley, still only 29, has over all these guys is a much more impressive resume,a reasonably healthy body, and recent playing time with a credible club.

  6. What do you mean let the Mexican players play for Mexico?

All of the guys in question and the ones he called were BORN in the US.

Castillo is the only one who had played both with the youth teams and the senior team in friendlies. All the other guys came up thru the US youth system or joined the US senior team in official games.

Orozco played for the US in the Olympics and in WC qualifying, Torres has been a regular for a while. Gomez also is a pure US bred player so what you talking about Acuña and Corona? Both from San Diego area

  7. Are you high? Look at the game vs Sweeden in Jan 09 and the others he plays in, he SUCKS!

He did a lot of stupid things vs Spain, whether the whole team was lost or not, he couldn’t do basic passes or see the field for a decent offensive sequence

Guy is garbage at that speed, he CANNOT cross, what exactly has he done when in the US uniform, did you not see how many times Bedoya set up Deuce for goals but kept missing? Bedoya had a good Gold Cup, Rogers found a way to get passed by both Bedoya AND Adu.

  8. He played good vs Arsenal preseason squad of mixed starters/veterans, reserves and back ups.

I refer you to the US game vs Chile and the ones before that in MLS and US team

  9. historically I’ve been bearish on Rogers but Rogers problem is at least partly about his club situation so I will take a wait & see stance. Maybe a sniff of international play will raise his transfer stock and get his head right again

  10. Klinsmann knows Rogers well, they played together in California. Rogers has a keen eye, has speed but lacks discipline and control, but a good coach can help, any player overcome and become a better player, and I do think that if someone can get Rogers to harness and control his abilities he can be a great player for us. On Clark, I have never been a fan of him and find him to be alonng the same lines as born stein, butnagain he does have skills and it might be that klinsamann sees somethingnin him and true as some one mentioned on this thread klinsmann is focusing on speed and creativity, we can see that with who he has called p, still puzzled at Beasley as a forward over Davies or Marcus Tracy or jermiah white but again he should know and probably has a plan.

  11. Agreed about Rogers, BUT what has edu done? Last time I checked he was a mediocre player for the best team in a Terrible league, worse than MLS. And he has never stood out for the national team

  12. good lord. the new coach who has not even had a game yet is being railed for his last minute inclusion. how about we at least let them play before comparing klinsman to bradley. also, keep in mind that this is a friendly at the start of the european club season. i would imagine that several clubs would be reluctant to send their players across the atlantic. now, i think rogers is not a great call-up, but let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

  13. Not sure I agree with this one. RR is a known quantity and what is known is he isn’t good enough. Lets hope JK just wants to see for himself and has no intention of actually playing him

  14. Dennis,

As I posted elsewhere on this list, it’s quite reassuring to see the reactions and postings, all this pissing and moaning about the team selections, have not changed at all since Bradley left. There is a comfort in consistency. And your friend Bradley will realise it aint’ personal.

If most of these guys had their way, Klinsi might be gone before Wednesday.

I bet SBI posters would support an American Idol style team selection where rosters, and selections would be done by voting on the net and over the phone.

Game days would be managed by ” guest tacticians” such as MichaK and Primoone aided buy media types such as Jamie Trecker and John Harkes. And we could also have Olivia Wilde, Hope Solo, Brooklyn Decker and Megan Fox along just to provide some gender equity.

England was managed by a selection committee until the 1954 World Cup so it is not unprecedented.

  15. The Rogers call up makes sense. He is in form, has pace and can play at least 3 positions with his two footedness. The Crew is in first place in the East in large part because of his and Gaven’s control of the wings. If JK can help him mature he will be a true asset for the team. His attacking style better suites what we expect from Jk than a Bradley team.

I would like to see this team play like the 2007 U-20’s. Altidore, Adu, Rogers, Bradley, etc. The best I have seen at an international level from the USA.

  17. Cleary with soccer, there is a real challenge predicting how an individual’s performance in one situation translates to a new situation. c.f. all of the failed DPs in MLS.

My suggestion with the National team is for the coach to call in his team, and the fans to pick “their” team from the leftovers and let them scrimmage. If the 1st team wins, we can all shut-up, if the fan team wins then some or all of those players get a chance. Let democracy reign… it’s working so well in Congress.

  18. It does not matter when it was the point is that he has done more for the nats then those two clowns. And spain really that was not rogers fault no one on the team was good in that game. Also his other call ups for the nats have been good. Bedoya maybe on a swedish club and going to rangers but he is still not good. If he was so good he would have started all the nats games

  19. Not the least informed comment of the day as Klinsman was quoted last night that he was at PPL park because he has not watched that much MLS this year and had been focusing on the Euro leagues. This made me think the same thing about his TFC position. If you are a consultant for TFC, you should familiarize yourself with the league they play in.

  20. Dax mcarty sucks he is only good for mls and that is it he is not international quality and his finishing is horrible and passing vision is not good either.

  21. When was the last time Robbie Rogers did anything? October of 2009, he had a corner kick assist to other scrub to tie the game at the last minute in the last game of WC qualifying against Costa Rica.

That game didn’t even matter other than to end up ahead of Mexico in qualifying standings.

He is very useless at the international level, didn’t he play vs Spain?

He can’t cross and for sure he can’t shoot after doing pretty decent on the runs down the flank.

Ream I’ll give you that, he’s playing badly all around now even for NYRB, but Bedoya hasn’t exactly been bad, he had a solid Gold Cup and is a starter for a Sweedish team, with a pending move to Rangers, a lot better than Rogers’ up & down MLS play?

  22. Thank u…I hated on BB for this kind of crap and I’m gonna hate on klins if he starts pulling this crap too. First match so I’m obviously gonna give him some breathing room but the leash is tight. Rodgers is the typical us soccer product. All speed, kick and run, robotic…sorry but no

  23. Letting TFC know how to set up their youth academy and reserves to a point in which they produce good enough players to start for TFC in MLS and CCL and how to sign good players from Europe and South America lol

  24. No Dax McCarty please. He’s in the same category as Rogers if not worst because the center mid position has Jones, Bradley, Clark, Torres and even Beckerman who I don’t even think should have been there, ahead of Dax.

When Holden and Edu are available in late September or October FIFA dates, guys like Beckerman and Dax shouldn’t even be brought up!

Feilhaber not sure why he didn’t get call, maybe Revs giving him grief about it, they are praying to get back in the mix for playoffs. Pontius is the main guy who should be called up but I think he’s probably also getting held by the club.

  25. Some perspective. I know Bob Bradley and like him. I always thought he did a pretty reasonable job of balancing the need for some experience to provide stability to the team and was always looking to bring new players into the team.

Good to see that this list gives Klinsmann the same kind of flak. And now I don’t feel that I have to defend him.

FWIW, I always thought Rogers was fairly one-dimensional, if he could not get past a defender, run up the wing and cross, he is pretty much done. But when it works, it does help his team.

  26. Cameron needs to try to make a case for himself in the nats thru Center Back, he needs to score off set pieces especially having Brad Davis more, only way he’ll get some attention because he plays center mid for the Dynamo, they really should pair him up with either Boswell or Hainault and have Taylor be a back up, or can Jermaine Taylor play center holding mid?

I like Cameron but he is playing for a very mediocre team, Kinnear cannot put together an offensive game plan

  27. Hm, would have liked to see Mix get another callup, or Bedoya. Probably too soon for Gatt. I’m not sure Rogers has a lot left to show us that we haven’t already seen.

  28. LMBO, you people are hilarious and do not watch players performances closely. Most of you troll rogers and talk smack about how he plays. But then you all and the sbi staff wanna get on boards and overate the likes of Bedoya and Ream who havd not done a darn thing for the national team. SMH, it is hilarious. Rogers has done way more for the nats then those too. And how has rogers made us loose a lead like bornstein did ? He has not come close to being like bornstein.

  29. Mexico is pretty deep in forwards and attacking mids as well as wings, well except for left wing? Not sure if Marco Fabian plays there or if they should of want to mix Medina from Chivas into the mix but I can see some of these guys getting tired of waiting.

De Nigris is pretty much their #2 FW, then you got guys like Reyna, Vela and the players from Chivas Fabian and Orellano as well as the kid in the U-20 team, not to mention the 2 or 3 guys from the U-17 who are now either trialing in Europe or already signed with say Liverpool who signed 1 guy.

Corona we could use because of wing play, Acuña also is useful if he wants to dress up, is not like he can’t go back if he plays in friendlies?

  30. Yeah but they keep delaying the call up?

Honduras has played friendlies and had the Gold Cup and could of tried to push him for the Concacaf U-20, but oh well.

I’m just saying if he gets his citizenship, and they haven’t capped him, I hope Jurgen goes after him. Honduras plays Venezuela on thursday and they don’t have Najar on the list of call ups. They will only play friendlies until next year?

I guess maybe they will call Najar up in March for the U-23 Olympics qualifying?

  31. It’s very reassuring to see that the tenor of the posts hasn’t really changed.

It’s just like BB were still here. People are still pissing and moaning about why the manager doesn’t agree with them on the quality of the players.

Every manager has their own “favorites”, especially national team managers who don’t get to spend a lot of time with their players. Klinsmann just about got fired for bringing one of his “boys” to Bayern Munich, someone named Landon Donovan.
