College Soccer Weekend Rewind

After a 2010 that saw the top spot change only once, the number one seed seems to be a cursed position this time around.

No. 1 North Carolina followed up a win over former top seed Louisville with a double overtime loss against unranked Virginia Tech. James Shupp broke a 0-0 deadlock in the 103rd minute to hand North Carolina it's first regular-season loss since Sept. 28 of last year. Set to take over the top spot is No. 2 Maryland, which exploded for a 4-0 victory over No. 13 Boston College thanks to goals from Casey Townsend, Taylor Kemp and a double from Patrick Mullins.

No. 4 Akron also came out with an offensive clinic in a 4-0 thrashing of Saint Louis. The Zips are averaging nearly three goals a game despite a rebuilt offense. No. 3 Louisville also bounced back after last weekend's defeat with a straight-forward victory over IUPUI and survived a scare with a 3-2 comeback victory over Central Arkansas. Will Vitalis scored in the final minute to hand Louisville a lifeline on Sunday.

Duke's woeful start continued with a 1-0 loss to Virginia. The Blue Devils are 1-4-0 while the Cavaliers started of conference play with a vital win. Virginia Commonwealth continues to be one of the surprises of the season and the Rams cemented their place with a 4-0 win over S.C. Upstate and a 2-1 victory over Coastal Carolina.

  1. While I believe these rankings are pointless this early in the season, Maryland is off to great start at 5-0! Townsend and Mullins are both starting strong with 5 goals apiece.

    GO MARYLAND!
