College Soccer Weekend Rewind

The college soccer season may only be a few weeks old but some highly-rated programs are already failing to live up to lofty expectations.

No. 12 Duke slumped to a couple of home losses over the weekend to No. 8 UCSB and No. 9 SMU. The Blue Devils are 1-3-0 without having even started ACC play. Overtime was the problem for preseason favorite UCLA with a double-overtime draw with unranked Santa Clara and an overtime loss to UC Davis. UCLA has yet to win a game this season after starting out ranked No. 2 in the country.

No. 3 North Carolina is off to a dream start after a 5-1 thrashing of Oregon State was followed by a 2-1 victory over top-ranked Louisville. Billy Schuler has returned from a season-long shoulder injury with a bang, scoring four goals in three games and leading Carolina's attack. Also off to a fast start is undefeated UConn, which made quick work of No. 21 California with a 4-1 win to open up a three-game winning streak to start the season.

North Carolina's main conference rival is off to a flying start with No. 4 Maryland opening with a 4-0-0 record. The Terrapins started off the weekend with a 4-0 victory over Stanford and followed it up with a narrow win against Radford to give coach Sasho Cirovski his 300th victory at College Park. Things aren't going quite so well in Winston-Salem as No. 20 Wake Forest is still searching for its first victory after a weekend draw and loss.

No. 2 Akron could take over the top spot following Louisville's loss but the Zips needed double overtime to get past unranked Cal State Northridge. Scott Caldwell scored in the 106th minute for Akron and coach Caleb Porter improves to 60-0-0 when Akron leads at halftime.

UCSB followed up its impressive win over Duke with a 1-0 victory over North Carolina State. The Gauchos are 3-0-0 through the first two weeks of the season and are averaging more than three goals a game. Indiana has been even more impressive on the offensive front with a couple of weekend victories by a combined score of 9-1.

  1. Penn State’s Bob Warming, got his 400th coaching win yesterday! He did most of his damage with Creighton during their glory years, but it’s a great feat nonetheless.
    Congrats to him!
