Honduras names roster for U.S. friendly

Honduras has announced its roster for the Oct. 8 friendly against the United States in Miami, a roster that does not include a few regulars while carrying a bit of an MLS feel to it.

Sporting Kansas City's Roger Espinoza, FC Dallas' Marvin Chavez and Houston's Carlo Costly were all summoned for the match. Chavez' call-up could affect FC Dallas, as Honduras also plays Jamaica on Oct. 11, and FCD has a game against the Chicago Fire on Oct. 12.

Some of the higher-profile names missing from manager Luis Fernando Suarez' roster include goalkeeper Noel Valladares, defender Emilio Izaguirre, midfielder Hendry Thomas and attackers Ramon Nunez, David Suazo, Georgie Welcome and Walter Martinez. D.C. United winger Andy Najar is also not part of the group.

Here is the team the United States will face in Miami:

GOALKEEPERS - Donis Escober (Olimpia), Donaldo Morales (Motagua).

DEFENDERS - Osman Chávez (Wisla Krakow), Bryan Beckeles (Olimpia), Mauricio Sabillón (Marathón), Erick Norales (Marathón), Johnny Leverón (Motagua), Maynor Figueroa (Wigan Athletic).

MIDFIELDERS - Oscar García (Olimpia), Julio César León (Shandong Luneng), Wilson Palacios (Stoke City), Roger Espinoza (Sporting Kansas City), Alfredo Mejía (Real España), Mario Martínez (Real España), Marvin Chávez (Dallas FC).

FORWARDS - Carlo Costly (Houston Dynamo), Jerry Bengtson (Motagua), Roger Rojas (Olimpia).

  2. I almost like it:

    GK: Howard, Hamid

DEF: Chandler, Bocanegra, Onyewu, Goodson, Cherundolo, Parkurst

MID: Feilhaber, Dempsey, Bradley, Diskerud, Edu, Bedoya, Beasely, Spector

    FW: Agudelo, Altidore, Gomez

I don’t think we see castillo again for awhile.
I don’t think we see Jones until he changes clubs.
I don’ know how many MLS-ers that are in playoff contention we’ll see…

  3. GK; i wouldn’t mind seeing Guzan or Kennedy (Chivas) called in over Hamid.. but i guess its good to have him there

DEF: not excited about castillo, but someone who plays left naturally..

MID: no Jones, rather an MLS player with promise like Shea, Franklin or Davis..(wing type)

FWD: don’t care if he is too old for 2014.. get Herc Gomez in there! maybe Davies over Bunbury?

  4. Good roster, but I say not to Jones he has not been playing and from what I heard he is with the reserves of Schalke 04 I have no idea why. He should have stayed at Black Burn.

  6. The in game rating is a reflection of how analysts and experts who consult on the game rate a player’s ability.

Basically a 66 rating is saying Edu’s only on par with average MLS players. Not saying I agree.

However, people clearly took note of his horrible midseason run of form at Rangers last season.

  7. Out of curiosity, how does a video game have ANY affect or relevance AT ALL to a player’s skill or abilities?

Didn’t the NHL game a few years back have a 12 year old Indian girl that was a 99 rated goaltender?

  8. Odd that he turned down the GC call up and is going now, but I guess he only misses one league game for these friendlies.

He has really done well this season though forced into some odd situations.

  9. I actually prefer Bradley to start. You need at least one guy that runs alot. However, I don’t like too many unskilled/athletic players because we wind up giving up too much possession.

  10. Well, I wouldn’t start ragging on Shea… he’s been showing up well for the USMNT.

On a related note, Mo Edu’s FIFA rating dropped from 74 to 66. That says something about his slump last season.

  11. Did they say why Najar wasn’t called up? From what I read about the beat down administered by Paraguay in the last FIFA break, Najar was the standout player in an otherwise poor Honduran team.

  12. Torres is injured. Rogers sucks – I don’t see him getting called again. I see Feilhaber getting a chance to replace torres. Possibly Bedoya or Adu, but because they have been at their new clubs less time than Benny, I see Benny getting the call. We also all saw what happened to Shea after his last USMNT appearances – he looked burnt out in MLS. I expect him to make 1 appearance maximum, especially as MLS post season fast approaches. Also, Klinsmann has a system that requires a holding mid – generally one non technically gifted – simply a good link from the defense to the attacking mid. That takes a spot for the Edu’s, Beckerman’s and Bradley’s of the US pool

  13. Joel, the Honduran team qualified for the WC in 2010 (as I’m sure you know) and are not short of talented players. They have (as most central and south american teams do) more techinally gifted athletes. What a torres, feilhaber or adu can do for us, the whole midfield can probably do for them. Saying that, the US has a much more physical presence that teams without superstars, a bit of luck, or both find difficult to play against. We also have a superior GK and attack than what Honduras is bringing. I would say their midfield is more technical, but our midfield plays at a higher competition level week to week. i’m not a big supporter of our defense, minus chandler and lichaj, so i would say we are about even, as their defense is pretty week too. Regardless, this is a big match and one containing 2 of CONCACAF’s top 4 teams. it should be a fun watch. My Prediction: USA 2 Honduras 1

  14. Is anyone here acquainted enough with this Honduran side to give an assessment of how the USMNT would fair against them, given our player pool but no official roster announcement? (I am and will be patient with Klinsmann and the team, but a win would obviously be nice.)

  15. Good roster. Some players are on some big teams – or at least on some teams in top notch leagues. palacios and figueroa in the epl, and osman chaves on wisa krakow. also we know espinoa and costly are good – its nice to see the mls recognition

  16. He will announce it shortly, but then he’ll say he wont. A few days later he’ll announce it but it will change again after he decides to ask the players “clubs” and he learns who is injured
