Must-See Goal: Jozy Altidore

Jozy Altidore continued his torrid goal-scoring pace for AZ Alkmaar today, scoring on a long-range blast in AZ Alkmaar's Europa league match vs. Swedish side Malmo (the same Malmo squad that eliminated Glasgow Rangers from the Champions League in earlier qualifying rounds). The game is still in progress, so we'll update with a final score (and any other Altidore goals he decides to deliver).

For those keeping track, today's goal makes it six goals for Altidore in all competitions for AZ, and this is probably the best of the bunch.

  1. Someone had better tell AZ how lazy he is. It would be terrible if the manager wasted much more of the season believing Altidore could be effective and watched his team go down the drain.

  2. Haha. Why is he showing to the ball while making space for others to run off of him?

If you’re gonna hate, at least try to do so with some kind of convincing argument. That one just makes it obvious that you’re grasping for straws.

  3. He didn’t start ‘most’ of the games there. He was in the mix. But it was a 1 forward set-up, and very, very defensive in the second half of the season. It’s hard to get goals when you never see the ball in the attacking third.

  4. Sir, if you think Jozy is a technical player you have NEVER watched a Barca game. His first touch fails him most of the time and his ability to take a player on 1v1 leaves little to be desired. Pedigree is not enough anymore and that’s what he’s lived on for several years. Don’t even get me started on his soccer IQ. It’s not all his fault, he was a victim of poor coaching like a lot of national team players.

  5. I just went back and read some of the comments on the initial post on SBI about his move to AZ. It’s amazing how little faith people had in him. 6 goals in 7 games. This is no joke.

  6. many won’t though. because many know nothing about how to build an attack through a midfield. All they know is get it wide and cross to a big guy or boot it to a big guy to “hold up.” or boot it to a big guy so he can knock it down to a little guy. They don’t understand the how a playmaker moves, where everyone is supposed to go in a 3 man midfield, they couldn’t tell at a given moment who should be dropping to cover the overlap by cherundolo, where should torres run now, should the pass go left or right now. where this midfielder should run after he just made a pass. Pass and move is foriegn to them because all they know is pass sideways and stand. And they’ve never been in a system that demands that players beable to take dribble past a player and pick their head up. Their idea of midfield is drop deep, and protect your the back four.

  8. Ik and its sad he’s not even playing and he’s better than most our midfielders. He scored in the mexico game and no one in the midfield looked good. Take your blinders off bud. Watch his performance vs spain

  9. Let’s hope we get to see some more long distance shots like this, eventually one will fall and it opens up the defense as they will charge him more, and I think Dempsey, Donovan, Shea and company are capable of doing things if he does indeed draw more attention from defenders.

I’d like to see us play someone like Nigeria, Ivory Coast and even Cameroon.

  10. You didn’t read the part where I said Holden would come in later?

Holden is coming back from injury, he hasn’t even played in a game with his club yet. Just 2 starts with the reserve team in which he went deep into the 80 minute+ territory.

WHY ON GODS EARTH would you play Micheal Bradley in place of well….. ANYONE?

He hasn’t played a club game in over 4 months if I’m not mistaken, and by playing I mean more than a mere 10-15 minutes in between a bunch of “dressed but did not play” or “Did not dressed” appearances for Aston Villa. He didn’t exactly did great in Gold Cup, see 1st 2 Mexico goals, off his turnovers.

1st game in Chievo he was on bench and the game needs hurt his chances to get in but he has only been there 2 weeks, I’d say wait for November to see if he’s gotten a good 1 month plus of game experience. The list for October games will come out 2 weeks from now give or take. Clubs will be notified in about 10 days. Bradley has a possible 2 games in that time, you think that’s enough to get him in game shape? Not fitness but touch and all that?

By the Oct 8th game there will have been a total of 3 possible Serie A games and maybe an Italian Cup fixture. So no, Bradley needs to get himself into playing form.

For now Edu and to an extent guys like Torres and even Beckerman are better. Hell not even Jermaine Jones is playing that’s why some others are getting time. Too bad Fabian Johnson is getting better for 4 weeks

  11. Agudelo hasn’t got much done with the time he’s had? I’d like to see Jozy start, he can be subbed for Agudelo. But right now it’s Jozy starting and scoring both in Holland and in Europa League. He’s only what 2 years and change older than Agudelo?

  12. Man if you think the USMNT midfield play was bad you should’ve seen the disaster that was the supporting cast at Hull!!! Watched many of their games absolutely little to no service or support for Jozy there!

  13. Wow! Glad to see Jozy hit the net. When the USMNT was training in Princeton, I was standing about 20 yards behind the goal and about 15 feet up, next to the concession stand. The team was doing a shooting drill and I was distracted by something and looked at the last moment as a ball Altidore struck missed its target and headed past my head. The ball hit the cinder block wall beside my head, it was traveling so fast even though he hit it from about 40 yards away from me; if it had hit me, I wouldn’t be tying this.

I believe that keeper had no chance.

  14. I get it. You are being sarcastic.

    But, Jozy Altidore still sucks.

Remember that amazing blast from Benny Felhaber in a huge game against Mexico (our arch-rivas, not fricking Malmo)?

    And now where is he?
