The United States men's national team has two friendlies in the next five days with Costa Rica and Belgium, but the identity of one if its next opponents may already be determined.

According to reports from Ecuador, the United States will host Ecuador in an Oct. 11 friendly in Connecticut. The proposed date falls in the Oct. 7-11 international-fixture window on the FIFA calendar, and the match would be the first one for the United States in Connecticut since a May, 2010, friendly against the Czech Republic at Rentschler Field prior to the World Cup.

The last time the two nations met was in March, 2007, when the United States won, 3-1, in Tampa, Fla., on the strength of a Landon Donovan hat trick.

What do you think of the potential friendly?

  1. Yep, I guess according to US Soccer, if you’re not from the east coast or So Cal, you’re just not a representative of the good old U S of A!

  2. Cause we have a new Coach that is building a new USMNT with old and new faces and it order to establish a good team first you have to play with Medium and lower team. After you go and play the powers of England, France, Brazil, Spain, Holland< Argetina and so for. For now I like that we are playing Belgium, Costa Rica, Ecuador but we should not only play here in the USA we should send the new team to play in Central America or in Mexico so they can used the enviorment.

  3. Good point. That would be a little extra time for our players flying over from Europe.

Or maybe it’s because Nike’s replica jersey’s only go to XXL and run about a halfsize small anyway so they know they won’t sell as many to the crowd in Seattle that can’t fit into one.

  4. Well I think is great but once again it show that the media in this country don’t want the MLS to growth especially FOX network. Is this a get back to the MLS from dropping them and going with NBC. How can you show a Europe (EPL) games to an American Audience that will be waiting to see a American Football game instead to introducing the MLS league to the American people. That is a F up thing to do.

  5. Agreed with all above. Hate the bouncing ball effect off that rubber pitch but what bother’s me most about Portland is they have that awesome crowd but on tv most of the time you can’t see them as they are in baseball stadium seating about six foot off the level of the field. Which means if anyone sees highlights they see the blank wall and not the fans and it looks like there’s no crowd.

  6. Hated them at first, but liked them when I saw them in the stores. Hate, hate, hate the beauty pagent sash one we’re wearing now and especially the red one. Miss the old one that was white with the one vertical stripe on the left side. Could go either way on the white polo looking one with the tiny pink horizontal stripes.

  7. Well we are in a period with a new coach who needs a variety of games to see exactly what he has. These matchups are good opportunities to bring in the players on the cusp of the national team to check them out against level competition (except Belgium who has sooo much more potential than the US now). Send the first squad against the likes of Spain but give the fringe players a shot against a team like Costa Rica.

  8. Right…forgot about that. Oh well…I’d still like to see a good match out this way. HDC gets them all…for good reason…but there are plenty of USMNT here in NorCal

  9. Washington Post this morning. Fox press release yesterday, showing Sept 18 Man U vs Chelsea (the other mathcup between these two will be shown the morning of the Super Bowl!), Spurs v Arsenal on Oct 2, Chelsea v Liverpool Nov 20th.

All are days when Fox has one NFL game (not a doubleheader).

  10. Stanford’s football stadium has been completely redone since 1994, in fact I think it was 2006. I think that’s why DCUPedro questioned if their field is wide enough.

  11. Yep. The football field. There’s no other venue I don’t think. I saw the game there last year and it’s a good facility. Cluster though, out of the parking lot.

  12. if we played more friendlies against JAPAN PERU and SOUTH KOREA it would be brilliant, and these are teams we should be facing pretty regularly IMHO.

  13. Wait, weren’t folks on this thread and other blogs keening about how we need to play major powers about a year ago? Why the sudden change and comments on how wise it is to play Ecuador, Costa Rica and Belgium in stead of Brazil and Spain?

Oh wait, I think I know… maybe reality?

  14. im with you here in Denver, there is a lot of territory that USSF does not get to, but a lot of it is understandable. hey at least we don’t have a single national team stadium where all the games are held like most other nations.

  15. I agree with putting in grass, but why should Portland have to expand their field size? It conforms to international standards. Fulham plays on a field that I understand to be almost identical in dimension.

  16. there should be a system of fan request, like they had for the world cup bid, to determine where home games are held.

solid game for USSF and should be a good showing in CT

  17. Did you ever think they don’t play tons of games in the Northwest because of the logistics? I hate to the bearer of bad news but it’s a 10 hour flight from Seattle-London.

  18. Stanford has hosted matches before. If I’m not mistaken Stanford hosted matches during the 94 WC. So that is a viable option. The BA does have the disadvantage of not having a soccer specific stadium. The one the Quakes may build certainly wont’ attract big time USMNT games. We may be out of luck for a while here. Sigh….

  19. Memo to Seattle & Portland: Please get real grass on your pitch (permanently).

Your cities would be outstanding hosts to national team games regularly, if this were done. Otherwise, I can’t make an argument in favor of hosting anytime soon.

  20. I think they’re glorious. I’m upset they were one and doen with the Copa…then again your comment may be why.

It was the only US jersey I had up until last year’s World Cup. Still my favorite.

  21. Maybe they don’t want to play in a baseball stadium again?

The only solution I could see is playing at Stanford’s new football stadium, but I’m not sure that is even wide enough.

  22. Dammit. I will now have to slice my bright yellow blue and red Ecua home jersey and my red USA jersey in half and then sew each half up together in perhaps the ugliest papaya mango smoothy inspired abomination ever seen.

  23. I look forward to the match. I was in Ecuador when the U.S. beat them 3-1 and I proudly displayed my Donovan jersey the next day. Ecuador is a good team and it should be a good matchup.

  24. I like the match-up. I’ve had enough of the friendlies against Argentina, Spain, etc. Let’s start defeating teams on our playing level before we consider ourselves world-beaters again.

  25. US Soccer is frustrating. Phoenix, Seattle, & the Bay Area haven’t hosted a game since 2007. Yet US Soccer decides, “Hey, lets put another game in New England, because they just hosted the Spain match & the 2010 WC sendoff.” If it has to do with being on the East Coast, then why don’t they play it in a new location. So Miami, Atlanta, the Carolinas, etc.

  26. I have to say, these are really well chosen friendlies. After the counter-productive games against Spain and Mexico bookending the Gold Cup, we’re now facing opposition that will provide something for the team to build on.
