Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

Clint Dempsey (ISIPhotos.com)

Clint Dempsey didn't wind up going anywhere in the summer transfer window despite a myriad of rumors, and now that the silly season is behind us we can watch Dempsey continue is role as clutch finisher for the Cottagers.

Dempsey and Fulham return to action today against Blackburn, the same Rovers side that came close to signing American defender George John. The Cottagers are still looking for their first win of the season, and will look to break that drought against a Blackburn side still looking for its first point of the season.

Another American who could be in action is U.S. national team midfielder Jermaine Jones, who didn't move in the summer transfer window either but has insisted he is determined to establish a place with Schalke, which plays Wolfsburg today.

  1. He was never moving to Arsenal. Not their type of player. They like guys that pass it around and around and around without shooting. Deuce is too aggressive.

  2. Stale is how I’d describe the entire Premier League season so far. It’s been a cakewalk for the two Manchester teams and the rest look like they’re still in rusty preseason form even though the season started a month ago. Most matches have been a borefest.

  3. Dempsey looks the best he has in a long while. He has looked great on the ball, with great passes (save for 1) and holdup play. All he needs is a goal to be man of the match. I really like him playing more centrally, so he doesn’t get lost for stretches on end. Sidwell and Murphy look like crap in the meantime.

  4. Everyone can be happy that Dempsey stayed at Fulham if they want to. But the fact remains that this Fulham team are poor, Dempsey can’t get incorporated into the game and may disappear for long stretches of time, and The Cottagers will likely be battling the relegation monster most of the year.

Of course, if he had moved to Arsenal Wenger wouldn’t be smart enough to use him properly anyway. He prefers 50 gram Spanish and French dudes who watch as many games from the training room as they spend on the pitch.

  5. Where did that bright inventive start by Fulham go? They slowed it down, look dull, and Blackburn get the first goal! Brian Ruiz looking overwhelmed with the speed & rough play – hopefully he’ll acclimate.

  6. Fulham with lots of poor service/vision in the final third despite having numbers in the box.

Blackburn scores – excellent left foot strike. 1-0

  7. Norwich City – West Brom is a great example of the beauty of promotion/relegation. Interest in this kind of match will never be high but the fact that both of these teams will be relegation-threatened makes it an important game. Pretty cool, really, considering it’s only week four.

And Mikey starts on the bench today for Chievo. At least he’s dressed.
