Chuck Blazer's run as secretary general of CONCACAF will come to a close at the end of this year.
Blazer told the Associated Press that he'll be resigning from his post in December after a 21-year run in the position. Blazer added that he will maintain his position on FIFA's executive committee, for which he won't potentially be up for re-election until 2013.
Blazer was at the heart of a FIFA controversy earlier this year, when he outed former CONCACAF president Jack Warner and former Asian Confederation president Mohamed bin Hammam for bribing Caribbean voters in the FIFA presidential election. Warner's acting successor, Lisle Austin, tried to fire Blazer in the fallout, but he never had the power to do so, and in-turn ended up with a suspension himself. Blazer was also reportedly under FBI investigation earlier this summer for questionable payments made to his off-shore accounts.
Blazer's replacement will be appointed by the CONCACAF executive committee.
What do you think of this development? Why do you think Blazer is stepping down? Whom do you hope to see take his spot? What do you think is next for him?

he gets really high and steals money from concacaf
Good, one corrupted member down, lots more to go.
Is it copyright infringment if I use this picture for my own Christmas cards this year?

For his next job he can be the backup Snuffle-uffegus on Sesame Street.
“former CONCACAF president Jack Warner and former Asian Confederation president Mohamed bin Hammam for bribing Caribbean voters in the FIFA presidential election”
That’s some high level and intense corruption sh.t there.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we find out before too long that Blazer is the most corrupt of them all.
Who’s going to take care of the ladies at the club?
So, people don’t like the fact that white guys live in the US? No racism there.
dammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm comment of the day cracked me up haha
DP for the Whitecaps next year
Once the issue of the Elections and the Trinidad meeting became news, my blog became the source of pictures of a lifestyle that many bloggers found objectionable. I was proud to know and happy to share those moments with you the readers of this blog. Instead, others used them to poke fun at me and my family and the pictures gave them a wealth of material to draw whatever fanciful conclusions they wished to make about many of the people found on these pages. – Chuckie Blog
FIFA is such a joke…i wonder which is more corrupt, FIFA or the NBA?
I’ve heard that Blazer can make more money by winning, “The Biggest Loser”….
I just like that an old, fat, rich, self-satisfied white guy respresents the US; its like everything people dislike about the US embodied.
He has some growing to do if he wants to be on Whisker Wars. 🙂
My ignorance? You’ll notice I say that I’m speculating. I also say at the end of my post that Blazer just may be tired of being accused of corruption all the time right now, especially if it isn’t true. I’ve given two very different possibilities. I don’t claim to know anything, just thinking out loud.
I actually slightly confused at your posts towards me.
I’m Chuck Blazer it is.
personally I think taking Bribes is very entrepreneurial.. lol
Well, he put in a headshot on Warner and Bin Hamman, so we should thank him for that.
Can you imagine Blazer in a Steve Jobs-like black turtleneck . . . . with that crazy beard overflowing
Hey abc, take it easy on Eric. I don’t see anything terrible in his posts to cause you to respond this way.
And my apologies if I am overreacting to yours.
This FIFA/CONCACAF board stuff is very ripe for speculation and gossip.
Interesting stuff. First, it is pretty amazing that an American holds such high positions in CONCACAF and FIFA.
He is only resigning from CONCACAF, and not until December. At that point, CONCACAF will have a new exec director, who will likely want his own Gen. Sec. Remember that Blazer and Warner served together for many years before the recent corruption scandals.
Good or bad, he is retaining his seat at the buffet table as a member of FIFA’s Ex. Co. until 2013. I say for good or bad because his presence on the Ex. Co. didn’t help much with our 2018 or 2022 bids for the World Cup.
Right. He knows how to use spellcheck so he’s totally the man for the job…
1. He’s going to run for the Republican nomination for President of the USA. Now that Palin isn’t running he’ll totally win the swimsuit portion.
2. He’s making a play to be Apple’s next idea man. First up the idon’tshave.
What, too soon?
*Insert superfluous Santa Claus joke*
+1
Maybe there’s more perks as the General Secretary of FIBA.
“I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s jumping ship before something else comes out.”
Don’t let your ignorance keep you from speculating about things you know nothing about!
Have you been following the FIFA bribery stories from the last half year??
Blazer is the one who turned on his FORMER friend Warner, and that’s almost certainly why he is now leaving CONCACAF, because the other Caribbean federations are close allies of Warner and now hate Blazer.
Time For Grant Whal to step up and fix things. He could not run for the top spot in FIFA maybe he can get the Secretary General spot?
I think you may be right about him knowing something is coming. Say what you will about Blazer, but he has proven to be an extremely bright and cunning politician. Unless it’s health reasons, I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s jumping ship before something else comes out.
Of course, maybe he’s just tired of dealing with all the accusations leveled at him and CONCACAF and FIFA. True or not, that kind of scrutiny would wear on you.
Hagrid! No!
Good article. It’s just hard to be a high ranking official in FIFA right now and not have some suspicions about the person. This is especially true when you consider Jack Warner one of your good friends. I’m not saying he’s a bad guy but he’s in some sketchy company.
+1, ha!
“What do you think of this development?” Interesting.
“Why do you think Blazer is stepping down?” I think there’s something he knows. Maybe CONCACAF wants rid of him anyway. Maybe something else is ready to hit the fan. Or maybe he’s decided to get out while he can, but has enough friends at FIFA to keep him in place on the ExCo should something come out.
“Whom do you hope to see take his spot?” Someone who isn’t crooked.
“What do you think is next for him?” I’d love for him to be interviewed by Andrew Jennings.
Is it possible to be in a position of prominence relating to soccer in the US and NOT be subjected to random internet potshots and irrational hatred? Blazer, Gulati, Bradley, Rongen…
Anyone who wants to know more about Chuck Blazer should Google “Trail Blazer Sports Business Journal 2010”
He has to retire to get ready for xmas this year.
I am still hoping for a headline that reads “Blatter Resigning from FIFA”.
FIFA is as crooked as he is ugly.
Perhaps he plans to enter the World Beard Championships
I just hope he dedicates all his time to his website now. It could potentially be the best website ever to exist on the internets.
Guess Santa won’t be making it rain/snow at the strip clubs with CONCACAF money anymore. Shame.
“I want to do something entrepreneurial. It was the right time. ”
Mr. Blazer
Uhm, I thought that he was already pursuing his entrprenurial interests. Or am I just “hating” because he got some mad perks???
Hey–membership has its privalages…
What exactly does this guy do again?
There must be labor issues at the North Pole he has to deal with…
