Tuesday College Rewind: West Virginia knocks off UConn, Akron beaten & more

A day after No. 2 ranked North Carolina suffered an upset loss to Davidson College, unbeaten and No. 1 ranked UConn also fell.

West Virginia rode goals from Shadow Sebele and Eric Schoenle to post a 2-0 victory over the Huskies in Morgantown on Tuesday night.The Mountaineers took it to the visiting Huskies for much of the match, and broke through when Sabele converted a first-half penalty kick in the 34th minute. UConn pressed for an equalizer, but West Virginia put the match out of reach when Schoenle headed home an insurance goal in the 79th minute.

UConn wasn't the only top-ranked team to fall on Tuesday.

Akron, the No. 4 team in the Fox Soccer Top 25, lost to unranked Michigan, 1-0, in overtime. The rematch of the 2010 NCAA College Cup semifinals was expected to be one-sided, but Akron failed to break through on Michigan's defense and the Wolverines sealed the shocking victory in overtime when Latif Alashe hit a beautiful chip into an open Akron net in the seventh minute of overtime.

The match of the night featured No. 5 South Florida, which traveled to Kentucky and handed No. 7 Louisville a 3-1 defeat. A pair of first-half own goals by Louisville put the Cardinals in a deep hole they were unable to recover from.

No. 14 Boston College edged Boston University, 1-0

No. 19 Furman posted a 3-2 win against Clemson

No. 21 Virginia beat Howard, 2-0

Elon pulled off its own upset, beating Wake Forest, 2-0

  1. South Florida is absolutely a contender. A graduate student goalie that was on the final four last year, the 2010 juco top scorer that has seemlessly transitioned to D1 and one hell of a coaching staff that has won the big east and made it the the elite eight in recent years. Only concern is defense that doesn’t allow many shutouts.
