MLS/CCL: Match Night Commentary

MLS_Primary_COL

Two teams fighting for their lives square off in the nations capital as D.C. United hosts the Portland Timbers in a must-win match for both clubs (8 p.m., MLS Direct Kick/MatchDay Live).

After coming off a shocking collapse in stoppage time against Chicago on Saturday, D.C. United needs a victory to maintain its hopes at securing the final MLS playoff spot. Portland, too, is in dire straits but could still stay alive for another match if it forces a draw. Either way, both teams need New York to lose tomorrow night, but it won't matter unless results go a certain way tonight.

The Colorado Rapids, meanwhile, can join the Seattle Sounders and Toronto FC in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League if they can become the third MLS team to secure a victory in Mexico. The Rapids have taken a full-strength roster to face Santos Laguna (8 p.m., Fox Soccer Channel), and they can cement their place in the knockout stage with a win. A draw or loss wouldn't eliminate the Rapids, but it would make them sweat out tomorrow's match between Isidro Metapan and Real Espana.

SBI will be providing live commentary for tonight's matches, so please feel free to join along and share any thoughts and opinions in the comments section below (Commentary begins after the jump):

  1. Freaking Joseph Ngwenya… I can’t stand that guy.

If he puts ANYTHING on that shot, DC have an amazing come from behind victory and even if they don’t make the playoffs they end the season on a positive note. Hopefully he’s in Montreal (or USL) next year.

  2. De RO for MVP! i know mvp’s traditionally go to players on play-off teams, but he single-handedly lifted and carried this team as much as one humanly could. his performance was tonight was incredible.

Ngwenya has got to learn to finish and put some urgency in his runs toward goal and shots! how could he miss???

  3. DeRosario staying up in the box with tons of contact (take not CD9), Korb and Kitchen having little moments where they show their potential, Hamid showing why he is national team material… great game, I love these desperation moments.

  4. Iff Olsen gets fired he could easily find work as a submarine captain. He’s already managed a team of experienced divers.

  5. DC can still do this, they had far more shots in the first half, and better ones (aside from the goal obv). Get Charlie Davies out of there, he is doing nothing. DeRosario is good in this current role but this is desperation time, they need to move him up top and add another midfielder.

  6. “The Rapids have taken a full-strength roster to face Santos Laguna…”

This is unfortunately not the case as several regulars/starters did not make the trip.
