The final Major League Soccer playoff berth is on the line tonight as I-95 rivals New York Red Bulls and Philadelphia Union clash at Red Bull Arena tonight (8pm, ESPN2).
The task is a clear one for the Red Bulls. Win or draw tonight and New York qualifies for the playoffs. Lose and New York must rely on the Portland Timbers to lose or tie in their final match in order for the Red Bulls to back into the playoffs.
The Union enter with their own goals for tonight's match. Peter Nowak's side can still clinch first place in the Eastern Conference, and a win would provide a major boost to the Union's hopes of grabbing the No. 1 seed in the East playoffs.
New York will have to get a result without star forward Thierry Henry, who is suspended after picking up a red card in last week's loss to Kansas City.
SBI will be providing live commentary on tonight's match so please feel free to follow the action here. As always, you are welcome to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.
Enjoy the action (Commentary is after the jump):
MLS fans are the biggest nerds. More interested in attendance than the actual soccer game.
They claim a full house semi-honestly, because all the tickets are sold. It will take many non-renewals of season tickets to get RBNY to figure out that they and Harrison have made getting to and from the stadium such a nightmare that it keeps people away.
There are games where it’s fair to slag on RBA attendance. Tonight was not one of them.
I looooove it when a Chicago Fire fan rags on RBNY attendance. It’s just…beautiful
what a disappointing way to enter the post season for both clubs….
And the crowd goes wild!!!!……oops, wrong channel was watching the World Series.
Roger Torres has been terrible.
I love how the Red Bulls claim a full house when the Red Bull logo is almost entirely visible…
What the hell was Nowak thinking with that line with the two kids. Way to play for the wild card spot stupid!
Tainio is an outrageous diver!
Zing!
Good to see there are more comments in here than fans at Red Bull Arena.
Some of the sloppiest football, at the professional level, I have ever watched.
It’s no wonder why the quality of MLS is questionable. And some folks think the top teams can compete at the 2.BL or English Championship level, are they smoking something?
Less than 5 minutes in the match and ream is already trying to give the ball away with his wunder passing ability….just outside his box….lol
+1 lindpere clearly deserves the captaincy. He is the one that brings it every night. Just goes to show how out of touch RBNY management and staff is with the actual product on the field.
Awesome banner union fans. “You will never get this!”
Marquez as captain is a disgrace. Joel Lindpere overlooked? What in the world is RBNY doing? Serious catering to a DP that doesn’t deserve it.
