One of the oldest and fiercest rivals in European soccer resumes today as Manchester United travels down the M6 to take on Liverpool (7:45am, ESPN2) in the latest installment of the North West Derby.

Manchester United is currently in first place in the English Premier League, tied with Manchester City, while Liverpool will try to crack the Top Four with a win. Wayne Rooney will get plenty of attention after his English National Team red card, but the pressure will also be on Liverpool to show it can compete with the big boys.

If the early-morning Man United/Liverpool clash is too early for you, don't worry. There is plenty of other quality action today. Manchester City will take on unbeaten Aston Villa in a tricky match-up for the Citizens, while Barcelona puts its dangerous attack on display against Racing Santander.

If you are interested in the American side of things, the MLS playoff race is heating up and today features some crucial matches. Sporting Kansas City plays host to the New York Red Bulls in the match with the most playoff implications, while D.C. United looks to keep their playoff hopes alive with a win against the Chicago Fire.

Looking to see some Americans Abroad in action? Today is your day. Tim Howard and Everton take on Chelsea, while Jozy Altidore and AZ Alkmaar will take on Ajax in a key Dutch League clash. Red-hot Estudiantes Tecus super sub Herculez Gomez looks to continue his second-half magic when Tecos takes on Chivas Guadalajara. You can also catch a glimpse of potential U.S. national team midfielder Joe Corona when Club Tijuana takes on Pachuca.

  1. Steve Nicol lost the job already. Piss Poor. Fire Burns and Nicol even if it’s only to make a statement that being the worst team in MLS in unacceptable. Hopefully Shalrie can have a nice moment or two before he bails on this crap team.

  2. Backe doesn’t understand that you ned a big, strong CB in the physical MLS. They ar awful at defending set-pieces with the soft Ream.

  3. True. But the future of the national team looks like it should be stronger in that regards. Now they need a bigtime scorer. I would have no problem if Jozy looked out of touch and even goofy with the ball through space, but something special has to happen in that last 18-20 yards that separates a great striker from any other player. This quality is more innate than experience and Jozy has never shown he is capable

  4. ref shoulda just given a yellow to Henry…still tho, Henry knew what he was doing there, completely could have avoided espinoza, there’s just no way he didn’t see him.

F*ck dane richards. what a douchy play..crawl back onto the field to purposefully stop the play. That crap needs to be banned. period. Do it Don. Stick it to FIFA.

Bunbury has GOT to finish one of those, or at least find Bravo on the back post.

  5. When United adds other young talent in their teens/early twenties, e.g. Da Silva twins, Ronaldo, Smalling, and further their development, they deserve credit for that as well. How many EPL teams utilize young talent as well as United?

  6. I assumed because of his temper that he had done something stupid but it looked accidental to me on the replay. If he did intend to make contact he’s a moron. He’s scored a lot of goals this year, but I hate his attitude.

  7. I meant to write tournament not cup. like not every tournament is a play-off. It is largely semantics i know i just don’t get the point of playing a tournament at the end of the season.

  8. Biggest NY FO mistake was not getting defensive depth in the middle…well, that and trading De Ro. With De Ro they didnt have to defend.

  9. No, that is not a play-offs, that is a cup. I like the US lamar open cup (I think this should get more airtime)and the Concacaf champions league. Hopefully some mls teams will get invited to the copa libertadores soon, that would be cool. I just dont get playing the entire season just to be entered into a playoffs. If you are the best you should finish first in the league.

  10. Funny how Tim Ream has become the whipping boy. Never mind the crap he is partnered with or the disinterested Marquez in front of him…

  11. shut the f*ck up. performing under high pressure is exciting and the playoffs are great. if you cant win when it matters then you dont deserve to win it

  12. So, I guess you don’t like the World Cup Finals, since it’s a … playoff. Teams all over the world compete to reach the playoff, then any team can win regardless of seed.

I think MLS is getting it right by having both a supporters’ shield and MLS cup, but I think there should be some in-league reward for winning the shield, not just a CL berth.
