A controversial red card marred the Merseyside Derby on Saturday, with Liverpool capitalizing on the man advantage to eventually post a 2-0 victory over Everton.

Before the Reds broke through, U.S. national team goalkeeper Tim Howard did his part to keep the short-handed Toffees in the match with his latest penalty kick save, this time stopping Dirk Kuyt with a perfect diving stop.

Here is Howard's penalty save:

  1. Eh, I don’t know if I can give it to England. Hart looks good and all, but when was the last time a goalie blunder didn’t cost England dearly in a major competition?

  2. Let’s be fair. Howard is a top 20 GK. He performs excellently for Everton and the same with the USA, albeit some lapses but he’s a LEGEND.

  3. Why, because I am calling it like I see it. It was an excellent save but it was a poorly taken PK by Kuyt. Don’t try to make it more than what it was. Or is everybody who has a different opinion a dope? That’s right, I forgot that dialogue on this site is near impossible without being shouted down or called names.

  4. Agree with you on Casillas(my favorite) and Neuer. Cech may be above Howard even though I would say he is on a downward trend. I want to see Hart play more for England. I feel Howard is better than Friedel (now) but think of how many countries would love to have Friedel in goal.

  5. I think Joe Hart, Cech, Casillas, and Neuer are definitely better. I’m sure I’m missing somebody but off the top of my head that is it. The Dutch keeper, Given, Schwarzer, and Julio Caesar are in the same category as Howard in my opinion. Friedel too actually. DeGea, Pepe Reina, and the Arsenal keeper are just below.

  6. Eh. If he was top five then there would be plenty of teams that would offer Everton money they couldn’t refuse, but yet none do it. He let in some soft ones in South Africa and is prone to mental lapses.

  7. You have got to be kidding me GJ… Timmy is a top 5 keeper… a superstar too especially if he has a good D in front of him.

  8. Here is a conversation question for all of you. What countries have a better #1 Nat keeper than the US? I have my thoughts but I thought I’d ask and see what everyone thinks.

  9. Great save. If his concentration could match his athleticism he would be the first superstar we’ve ever produced… but it doesn’t. Still by far our best option and most teams would love to have him.

  10. Yeah, you are right…I only watched in live. on replay it did look to be just about in the corner. I maintain it didn’t have much power behind it though. I will upgrade my opinion of the save to borderline dynamic on further review.

  11. The red card was complete nonsense. It was a borderline foul. I was shocked when Atkinson produced the red. On the Howard penalty save: it was a nice save no doubt. Dynamic might be a bit of an overstatement. It was poorly taken by Kuyt. Not much power behind it and not in the corner. Still, it was a an excellent save and Howard had an excellent game.
