Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Brondby IF won its first game since early October in shocking fashion this past weekend, and it can partially thank Clarence Goodson for that.

Along with going the distance and limiting first-place FC Copenhagen to one goal, Goodson scored the opener in Brondby's 2-1 victory on Sunday. The goal, which came off a headed effort following a free kick, was the U.S. international's first of the season.

Robbie Findley also found the back of the net, scoring the first equalizer in Nottingham Forest's 3-2 win against Ipswich Town. Findley upped his league total to two goals when he knocked in a ball from close range after a teammate headed it down to him. Findley now has five goals across all competitions this season.

It wasn't all good news this weekend. Steve Cherundolo once again failed to see time for Hannover 96, dressing but not playing as the club lost to VfL Wolfsburg, 4-1. Cherundolo has just five league appearances this season and has not played in a Bundesliga match since October 23.

What do you think of these performances? Impressed by Goodson's goal? How many total goals do you see Findley scoring this year? Are you worried about Cherundolo's lack of playing time?

  1. plus one for sure, BUT, that was just one of many terrible things he did. I can’t think of one thing, or one phrase heard come out of his mouth, that I enjoyed or that enhanced my enjoyment of the game. Even if I agreed with what he said, often times it was not something I wanted to hear from an announcer. Glad as efff he is gone.

And just so you know i hate all announcers, i freaking love ian darke, he usually has something pleasant to say that enhances the experience, without kinda ruining it for me. With twellman, maybe i will finally prefer the sounds on: crowd and announcers. Finally. Here is hoping.

p.s. Twellman might not be the greatest, but i think he will be more reserved and more announcer like/ professional. Harkes wasn’t paid to be a coach, he was paid to add some interesting color to the play by play. I want an announcer, and hopefully twellman is one, who does just that. i’ll do the arm chair coaching myself, thank you!

  2. He doesn’t exactly have the physical attributes to play CB, he’d get knocked around by more physical strikers even tho he isn’t that short. He’d have a hard time getting PT at right back at the moment. I would like to see Rolfe get a look tho, def couldn’t hurt with our lack of forward options

  3. He’s underrated and 5’11. And plays right back. Where Cherundolo is the KING and we have Lichaj/ Spector as the backups.

  4. Will someone clarify why Parkhurst never recieves a call up? The man goes 90 every single week and it’s like he’s the forgotten man in a position we could use a lot of help in. You could also include Rolfe in that rant, too.

  5. To be frank, Harkes didn’t know what he was talking about. To clarify, he would misspeak, and then stick to his statement even after replays would show he was wrong.

Harkes: That was a a clear red card for me. Ian?

    (crickets…)

(replay shows minor foul, not even warranting a yellow)

Harkes: Yea, clearly a red-card offense there.

    WHAT?!?

  6. He was honest, spoke his mind, and wanted nothing more than the US to be a great team and win. And when they weren’t great he called them out. Sure beats listening to Adrian Healy and his constant fluffing of mediocrity.

  7. Listening to Harkes was one of the maddening things ever. I’ve never seen an announcer or commentator in any sport be as critical of the “home” team as he was. Pretty clear ESPN got tired of it too.

  8. exactly. It was a minor injury and he was on the fence for playing in the Slovenia game. Probably could have played but they must have taken the conservative approach. A week later he’s all better.

  9. I think I must be the only one that actually liked Harkes. And Twellman? I haven’t liked him in the studio even when I DO agree with him. He’s twice the whiney brat that Harkes is (which I’m pretty sure is the biggest complaint about Harkes).

  10. Harkes is OUT! I was just thinking yesterday that would be an upside of Fox getting World Cup rights, no more Ty Keough impersonations by the pathetic fornicator.

  11. I’m sure Dolo has another season in him, it’s just Hanover is doing quite well at the moment and he’s pretty much a sub at best. I doubt he would return to MLS to play.

  12. Sad to see how quickly Dolo is losing it. He was a rock in the world cup last year, but has been sloooooow in the friendlies and isn’t starting for his club anymore.

He was one of our most underrated and underappreciated players in quite a while.
I hope to see him in MLS before he retires.

  13. The Mayor is a step slow, and it’s been going that way for a bit now. Whispers in Germany have it that he’ll be retiring after the season.

  14. Two thoughts-
    1) Why isn’t Dolo playing?
    2) Is it that much of a stretch to say at the moment, for his position, Brad Friedel is a top 3 American player, at age 40? He’s a key part of a team that’s third in the prem.
