Another day, another MLS player going abroad to train.

Andy Najar has become just the latest player to get a training stint in Europe during the MLS offseason, as he is set to practice with Tottenham Hotspur. Najar will head to London tonight to begin a two-week trainining stint that ends on Dec. 10.

Najar is the third D.C. United player to train abroad this offseason, joining a list that includes Bill Hamid (West Bromwich Albion) and Perry Kitchen (SC Freiburg).

What do you think of this development? Like that Najar is going to Tottenham for a training session?

  1. Ha, you think Redknapp has spent more than a second thinking about Najar? Now who’s being ridiculous?

You think every player training abroad is there because the team sees the player as a prospect? You think Kaiserslautern is really taking a look at Beckerman or Rogers? These kinds of favors happen all the time. It’s nothing more than that.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great move for Najar for sure. It’s just silly to think that a training stint signifies interest.

  2. Don’t be ridiculous. It may not technically be a “trial” but if Redknapp thought there was no chance that Najar is now or will ever be a prospect for the EPL he wouldn’t waste his time doing a “favor” for MLS.

  3. Again, Spurs are not “looking at” Najar. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great opportunity for him to train with great players, but this is not a trial. There is 0 chance that Spurs have the slightest bit of interest in taking this further.

  4. The favor works both ways my friend. They are getting a talented player to look at. As for a Modric replacement, we have plenty of time to see what happens. My guess is that Najar will go a lot farther than Freddy did. Again, this is just the first step for Andy.

  5. Damn, PDXlol already got to my post. How about Honduran fans and press annointing him as the best player on the planet, the most promising youth player ever to strap on a pair of boots, only to have him show up peroidically to put in a stellar performance in an international. Now that would sound like Gio…

  6. Right. Klinsmann has had nothing to do with DCU’s players going overseas for training. And why would he have anything to do with Najar? He’s not going to be a USMNT player.

  7. This isn’t “interest”. They’re just doing him a favor. It’s not a trial and I’m sure neither side has any expectation that this could lead to something more. Najar is a good player in MLS but he will never be a “Modric replacement”.

  8. Thanks SBI for the report. So glad to see that he is getting some interest from the better leagues. I’m sure that Harry is always looking toward future squads and needs to watch for possible Lennon and Modric replacements. They need to see if he can play or has the potential to play in the EPL. If they do, then Andy will probably be seen as a bargain compared to what they pay for known players. This is just the first step in getting to that point. Just hope some hack on a reserve team doesn’t cut him down.

  9. Another U-19 and reserves training where no one will be watching these MLS players. None of these trainings will result in a single look by the senior teams, first team coaches or managers.
These articles are misleading because these players are not going to play with the first teams.

  10. Really?

Do we really need a player like him so bad? Is he really going to be an upgrade to the US team?

And I SAID that Honduran Fans don’t care about ANY US players plane and simple and why should they?

Hey just take it easy and take a deep breath because you are getting over exalted buddy. Just relax. And nope, I am not out of touch I just see things how they are, I don’t care about other National teams and I am fine with people from other nationalities not caring about the US. Is there something wrong with that?

    Take a chill pill.

  11. Umm what? Saying playing for the US never crossed your mind is not the same as saying he wouldn’t. Honduras has not cap tied him and he would be a welcome addition to the US corps. If anything to increase positional competitiveness. And how would you know what hondurans care about? You are obviously out of touch with what people in your own country care about. Further it’s relevant because he is a fairly relevant MLS player. Nobody ever said SBI only covers US players. So I guess…. shutup?

  12. Ives, why are you following a Teen who already decided to play for Honduras? I mean how is this relevant for US Fans? Even if he is not cap tied to Honduras, he already said that playing for the United States never really crossed his mind seriously ( I wonder why he bothered keeping it as a secret anyway) . I am fine with that, it was his decision and he is free to chose whatever is best for him. However, shouldn’t we just get information about potential US players instead?

I guess most of us really don’t care much about him just like Honduras care about U.S. Players…

(SBI-Najar is one of the better young players in MLS. Him not playing for the USA is irrelevant. As for people not caring about Najar and what he does, speak for yourself. It’s safe to say plenty of Americans are interested to see MLS talent making big moves, USMNT player or not.)

  13. He was playing some nice combos with DeRo there at DCU. Would love to see the guy on the field for the USMNT. Also a Spurs fan, so it’s all good. Najar is definitely the kind of player the US needs more of.

  14. It seems like a lot of players are heading to Europe this off season. Has this always been an option, or has the MLS profile risen? Therefore big clubs allow players to come and train. What do the clubs gain from this? Are they being compensated?

  16. I thought I remember reading that after not being cap tied in the Gold Cup that he would still be open to playing for the U.S. Anyone remember this or was it just a dream?

  17. There’s still hope.. He can play in as many friendlies as he possible wants ha.. As long as he’s working on that US citizenship on the DL

  18. Well that makes sense since the Spurs and DC are sister clubs…oh wait…isnt that suppose to be San Jose 🙂 Its good to see some of the individual players get some training time with good clubs. I am not sure about how “formal” the reserve league games are in the EPL (ok I am sure it is quite formal)..but what about getting some type of mix MLS team to go over on a mini reserve league tour like the Adidas guys do? The bigger names can earn their own spots but maybe grab 7 guys from Dallas and Houston (so there is some familiarity) and have the “MLS Cowboys” or just put together a decent team from across MLS (again it wont be a real all-star group since the better players will be doing their own thing) but they can do a short 4 game tour playing a few EPL reserve teams. Its part practice and part mini-marketing for MLS.
