American soccer fans always love a chance to glimpse the future of the U.S. national team, and this weekend will offer at least a few looks at some exciting prospects who could one day play a role on the senior national team.

The U.S. Under-17 national team is taking part in the Nike Friendlies, and while tonight's match against Turkey was an intriguing one, the match-up Americans are most anxious to see is Sunday's showdown vs. Brazil. Standouts like New York Red Bulls academy striker Wesley Wade (pictured above) should have their chance to test their skills against the perennial world powers.

The weekend's club soccer schedule is light on marquee match-ups, but there are still some matches you won't want to miss. In Germany, Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Moenchengladbach face off in a battle of teams tied for first in the Bundesliga. In England, Manchester United looks to halt its recent struggles with a win at Aston Villa. For MLS fans, the Los Angeles Galaxy continue their Asia Pacific tour with a match against the Philippines national team.

Here is a rundown of this weekend's soccer on TV:

  1. I played rec league with a guy from the Phillipines national team. He was about the same level as guys who had played D1/D2 college ball. Tidy player, medium pace, great shot though.

  2. Been battling relegation every year for the past decade I believe. I believe it’s the same squad. Maybe a new GK. Reus was scoring goals last season, but now he’s scoring loads of goals this season

  3. I was right. Wikipedia 2010 World Cup qualifying: Philippines did not participate. Neither did Laos, Bhutan, and Brunei. So “Philippines has a national team?” is a legit question.

  4. I believe a few small nations didn’t compete in World Cup qualifying, including some in southeast Asia, like Laos.

Philippines are ranked in the 150s, not terrible actually.

  5. Here’s some trivia. The largest margin of victory by the Philippines national team is 15-2 over Japan in 1917. Their largest margin of defeat was also to Japan, losing 15-0 in 1967.

I just had to Wikipedia it after I heard that the Philippines had a national team.

  6. I don’t follow Bundesliga much at all. But isn’t Gladbach as massive surprise at the top of the table? They were battling relegation last year.

Did they get an influx of money or are they playing with essentially the same squad as last year? If it is the same squad, wow what a job the manager has done.
