Timmy Chandler has enjoyed a solid start to the Bundesliga season for FC Nurnberg, and at least one other club has taken notice.

According to German publication Bild, VfB Stuttgart has set its sights on Chandler as a potential replacement for expensive fullback Khalid Boulahrouz. Stuttgart, where Jurgen Klinsmann played early in his career, could make a move for the U.S. international during the looming winter transfer window as it aims to improve on its seventh-place standing in the Bundesliga, but Nurnberg is in no rush to let go of Chandler.

Nurnberg manager Martin Bader reportedly said the club has been in preliminary talks with Chandler over an extension, but the 21-year-old defender said he wants to focus on getting relegation-threatened Nurnberg further away from the drop zone first.

Chandler's current deal ends in 2013.

What do you think of Stuttgart's interest in Chandler? Would you like to see him make the move? Prefer he stays with Nurnberg?

  1. I may be a bit biased since I too support VfB, but they have qualified for Europe 4 out of the last 5 years (except this year) and have qualified for the Champions League twice in this time frame. Also, Chandler would not be able to compete against Benedikt Hoewedes (Schalke’s captain) and Lukasz Piszczek (Dortmund) at RB. And although Moenchengladbach is having a stronger than usual year, they are perennially fighting the relegation battle. No sense in going to any of those teams listed above, and Stuttgart would most certainly be a great step forward for Timmy.

  2. lol. Okay, GW. We agree that Chandler after only about 11 months in the Bundesliga already is a good player and, I suppose, we agree that he has the potential to keep on improving and maybe become a great player. I am not saying he should turn down Stuttgart if an offer is made and I am not looking down my nose at Stuttgart. It is a good team and might be playing European soccer next year and I hope they kick Bayern’s butt today. But unless there is some personal reason that Chandler is really hot on Stuttgart, I think he should be patient and see what other offers come in. My hunch is that better teams than Stuttgart are going to be trying to snag him.

  3. “But as a huge Timmy Chandler supporter I think he should aim higher than Stuttgart. ”

I happen to think Chandler is the best thing to happen to the USMNT since sliced bread but ” he should aim higher” ignores the fact Chandler, like most players, is the seller not the buyer.

I’m a little tired of people criticizing players for their transfer choices.

Doesn’t he have to have to get an offer first?

It’s easy for us to look down our noses at the pitiful offerings of these lesser clubs but what if Dortmund, Inter, Man U., Barca or whoever do not need a right back or have already identified a better or cheaper alternative elsewhere?

We are in no position to know what the true state of the transfer market is so to criticize Chandler for considering a move to Stuttgart strikes me as wrong headed.

  4. Regardless of the destination, Chandler would be wise to jump ship if/when Nurnberg is relegated. The 2. Bundesliga ain’t no joke, but he’s top-flight material on a mid-high table team (Schalke, Werder, Leverkusen, etc.)

  5. Sorry, Kris. I can understand your excitement. But as a huge Timmy Chandler supporter I think he should aim higher than Stuttgart. I have thought for several months that he would be leaving Nurnberg in January for a big transfer fee. (The Bild article says that Stuttgart would have to pay over 3 million, which is a joke. No way will Chandler leave Nurnberg that cheaply. I think the fee will be closer to at least 6-7 million. I hope Chandler holds out for an offer from a top team like Schalke, Dortmund or Borussia Monchengladbach (but please, not FC Bayern), or better yet, ends up in the Premiere League or La Liga. Inter Milan also is in the market now desperate to sign a good defender. I think there is going to be a bidding war for Chandler and that Nurnberg, which a few years ago was in the 2. Bundesliga will be happy to pocket the millions.

  6. As the resident VfB fan in the Ives community, all I can say is I’m thrilled 🙂

With that said, Boula has been a top tier RB so far this season. But he is injuried for at least a month or two 🙁

Celozzi, our young RB signed awhile ago, is pretty bad.

  7. Nope. He’s only played in friendlies. He has play in a FIFA sanctioned tournament or in a World Cup qualifier before he is cap-tied.

  8. This move is fine for him but, truth be told, if he keeps progressing he’ll have clubs like Bayern and Dortmund vying for his services in 2 – 3 seasons. This is especially true given the relatively few high-quality right back options in Germany right now.

Such a move would be much more intriguing.

  9. If there is a position battle, I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing. Needing to fight for a spot in the starting 11 can only raise his game, although the way the article was worded, it sounded like they wanted him to replace their expensive starter. Can only be a good thing for him the way I see it.

  10. Haha, not yet. I guess even though he’s stated he will never play for Germany, in this day and age, with all the about faces, it’s hard to believe someone at face value. I for one, do believe him. On the topic of should he or shouldn’t he go for the VjB Stuttgart offer, it’s a tricky one. In Nurnberg,he’s getting loads of playing time but they are also in a relegation battle. What if they are relegated, will he stay with them or try and go elsewhere? At Stuttgart, he’ll probably get playing time as well, but that club could also have more players battling for positions. But Stuttgar could also very well challenge for Europe.
