Americans Abroad: A Look Ahead

Landon Donovan did not lead Everton to victory in his return match for the club, but he will not have to wait long to get another chance at that.

Donovan and Everton will take on lowly Tamworth of England's fifth division in a third round FA Cup match on Saturday. The Toffees are considered the heavy favorites in the match that could see Donovan score his first goal for the club in just under two years.

Adam Henley might also see the field this weekend, as Blackburn Rovers look to knock off Newcastle United in the FA Cup. The 17-year-old, who was born in Knoxville, Tennessee and is eligible to play for the United States, England or Wales, should continue to man the left back spot for Blackburn if he is given the start.

Saturday's headlines might be dominated by the FA Cup matches over in Europe, but just south of the U.S. border there will be a handful of watch-worthy matches as Mexico's Clausura kicks off. One of those matches could see a healthy Jose Torres and Pachuca take on Herculez Gomez and his new club, Santos Laguna.

Another match that you might want to tune into will be when Oguchi Onyewu and Sporting CP face FC Porto in a match of Portuguese heavyweights. Third-place Sporting CP needs a result to keep itself within striking distance of Porto, the Primeira Liga leaders.

  1. Big match ups outside of England. Gooch and Sporting v. Porto (and) Bradley and Chievo v. Roma – hoping our Yanks have a good showing. Don’t think the Chievo match is on FSC or Fox Deportes, which sucks.
