Injured Agbossoumonde, Bingham replaced at U.S. Under-23 camp

Centerback Gale Agbossoumonde and goalkeeper David Bingham have been forced to withdraw from United States Under-23 national team camp with undisclosed injuries ahead of today's opening day of training at the Home Depot Center, according to U.S. Soccer.

German-American defender Royal-Dominique Fennel, recently signed Columbus Crew Homegrown goalkeeper Matt Lampson and Los Angeles Galaxy goalkeeper Brian Perk have taken their places at the camp. Lampson and Perk will provide support behind the more experienced Zac MacMath, while Fennel returns for his third consecutive U-23 camp.

Also of note at U-23 camp is that UCLA playmaker Kelyn Rowe left the MLS Combine early to participate in U.S. training.

  1. It’s safe to say if Messi really wanted to go to the Olympics Barca were not going to upset him.

Chandler does not have that sort of clout.

  2. Opara has yet to show he’s fully recovered from breaking his foot. we should know more once training officially starts, but i agree with you- this guy still has the potential to be a top CB in the league and for the US. hopefully he’s fit and ready, since the Quakes are going to need him more than ever this year, even with new CB Bernandez.

  3. I really do worry about the talent pool at CB, and wouldn’t mind if two over-aged players were called in.

For that matter, I’m entirely unconvinced that Boss has any chance of a big impact now or ever. He’s the kind of player who gets eclipsed by late bloomers.

  4. Fennel is widely cultivated, both in its native range and elsewhere, for its edible, strongly flavoured leaves and fruits, which are often mistermed “seeds”. Its aniseed flavour comes from anethole, an aromatic compound also found in anise and star anise, and its taste and aroma are similar to theirs, though usually not as strong.

  5. Ike Opara has to be healthy first.

Porter needs to reach down an age level and call in John Anthony Brooks.

I predict the CB pairing is Brooks and an overage CB, maybe Cameron or Ream.

  6. With respect to Chandler his availability is questionable. Olympics are not an official FIFA tournament and, thus, the clubs are under no obligation to release their players for the tournament. There may be ways to work around it. Messi, for example, was to miss the Olympics, but fortunately for Messi (and the gold medal winning Argentina) Barca hired Guardiola and Messi persuaded him to let him go. I am not saying that Chandler definitely will not be available, but there’s some question if he would be permitted by his club to play in a non-FIFA tournament. Given that Chandler had to miss the Gold Cup because of his club’s preference, it’s a legitimate concern.

  7. true, i guess there is White, Wagner, Brooks, Kitchen, Ibegha… i hear good things about them but its going to be academy players and mls rookies and sophomores.

  8. Ike Opara was hurt almost all season last year and over half of the season before that.

I think he’s good as well but he might not even be cleared to play or practice

  9. Every roster so has had great midfield and attack but the defence has been thin for day 1. Keep in mind that will have timmy chandler, assuming we qualify, but the overage players should be boca and gooch

For qualifying opara, kitchen and others hopefully can cover

  10. Fennel was born in the states so I think Zimmerman will be OK with him. But this does underline a huge problem with the U-23’s. We are lacking in the CB area. I have been surprised that Ike Oparra has not been called in at all. It may be time for Porter to call in Ike Oparra.
