A day after unveiling Quaker Oats as its jersey sponsor, the Chicago Fire made another big announcement.

The Fire re-signed midfielder Pavel Pardo on Wednesday, the club announced on its website. While terms of the deal were not originally disclosed, a report on the club's website states the deal worth two years.

The former Mexican international joined Chicago in July 2011, and helped the club post its second best regular season finish at 7-2-1. Pardo played in 14 competitive games for Chicago last season, scoring one goal and assisting on five.

Here are more stories from around the globe:

LAZIO EYEING ARSHAVIN

Andrei Arshavin has not been a lock starter for Arsenal this season, and that could soon lead to his departure from the club. Lazio is linked with making a move for the Russian international during the winter transfer window. The Serie A club is ready to make a bid for the 30-year-old winger worth an estimated $9.2 million.

SCHWARZER SIGNS EXTENSION WITH FULHAM

Fulham re-signed one of its top players on Wednesday, as goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer agreed to an extension that will keep him with the club until the end of the 2012-13 season. The 39-year-old Schwarzer, who is currently injured, said he wants to keep playing until at least the World Cup in 2014. The Australian international signed with Fulham back in 2008 and has been one of the Premier League's top goalkeepers since.

GEOVANNI WANTS RETURN TO ENGLAND

Former San Jose Earthquakes striker Geovanni is currently plying his trade in his native Brazil, but he is hoping that is not the case for long. Geovanni wants to return to England, where he previously played for Hull City and Manchester City. The 32-year-old striker is currently on the books for Esporte Clube Vitoria, but it is believed that the club is willing to let him go during the winter or summer transfer window.

What do you think of the Fire re-signing Pardo? Do you see Arshavin thriving in Serie A? Expecting Schwarzer to maintain his level for the next couple of years? Should Geovanni return to England?

  1. I remember the clowns on here that said Pardo would be a mistake…MLS teams were lucky Chicago didn’t sneak into the playoffs. Same with Toronto and their acquisitions.

  2. The Fire are such an intriguing team, a paradox of sorts. They have an owner whose shown he’s willing to spend, but hasn’t always spent wisely and may or may not have backed off as a result of that. They play in the 3rd largest market in the country that should be desirable to both European and Latin American players in terms of night-life, cosmopolitanism, things to do, etc., yet, in part because of weather and in part because of Al Capone, it seems to definitively be a tier below LA/NY. They have some of the most fervent fans who have been there since 98, yet, in part because of poor recent performance and in part because of how far away Bridgeview is, they have relatively poor attendance. I think going forward things could be looking up for the Fire.

  3. Everyone is happy about Schwarzer signing and extension, except David Stockdale. He is in a similar situation to Brad Guzan.. but it may be in his best interest to wait out the next two years rather than try to find a new club. He’s a quality keeper and will continue to learn from Schwarzer. When Mark retires there’s no doubt he will be Fulham’s starter.
