Toronto FC signs Ecuadorian defender Caicedo

Toronto FC appears determined to fix its defensive problems, and it has turned to an Ecuadorian international to help it do so.

On the day it signed Richard Eckersley to a permanent deal, Toronto announced it acquired defender Geovanny Caicedo. The 30-year-old, who has earned eight caps for Ecuador since making his debut in 2009, last played for LDU Quito.

Caicedo was most recently called in for Ecuador for its friendly against the United States at Red Bull Arena last October. He joins compatriot Joao Plata on a Toronto team looking to make the MLS playoffs for the first time in club history.

What do you think of Toronto acquiring Caicedo? Expect him to do well in MLS? Should teams look for more Ecuadorian talent?

  1. thanks.
I knew the bit about Quito, wasnt sure about his quality.
Dont think our attackers will have any probs.
Also signed Miguel Aceval, you know about him at all?

  2. hes played in a club team called Liga de quito (ecuador) and they have been arguably one of the best clubs in south america the last 4 years…he has played against some of the top teams in international competition down in south america and has done very well..that should translate superbly to MLS. He will do his job on the defensive end thats all i can say…it would be up to the attackers to do their job on that end in order for TFC to have a chance at the playoffs.

  4. 8 caps with Ecuador national teams too.

Does he fix all TFC’s defensive issues? Probably not but at least now we don’t have to use Torsten Frings as a libero, which obviously was out of necessity and not choice.

Might as well, MLS is going to have drained the Columbian league dry by the start of the season. We’ll need ne leagues to look at.

I like the sound of his name. However, not knowing anything about Ecuadorean football, I have nothing intelligent to add. I suspect the same is true for any other commentators. Prove me wrong.
