Landon Donovan and Brad Friedel's highly-anticipated match-up is finally here.

The two Americans are both in their respective team's starting lineups, as is Tim Howard, for Tottenham's home game against Everton (2:45 p.m., Fox Soccer Channel). Donovan will look to help the Toffees upset the Spurs in his third game back while also attempting to silence one his most recent critics in Friedel in the process.

  2. +1 With the you all the way on this one, GW. Donovan was the best player by a mile on an awful Everton team. Yes, he had the one bad touch early with the ball going straight to Tottenham, but in general his passing was excellent and he was much more poised than his teammate. How anyone on this board can say Everton was “trying to play through LD” must not have been watching the game. Everton again focused its attack on the left, while Donovan was mostly playing right and being ignored. The Everton coach needs to force the Everton players to involve Donovan more.

And as for complaints about Donovan’s defense, why in the world is Donovan was playing the full field all game, right attacking midfielder-forward and then racing back to play right defender for the crap Everton defense. Give the guy a break.

  3. You are unrealistic.

Typically when you a play a team that is substantially better than you at almost every position on the field

“it’s fair to say he didn’t create enough. ”

What is that supposed to mean? If Everton was going to get a result it would have been from whatever Donovan did create but his teamates could not do anything with it.

You only need one or two chances and Everton squandered what they had. It’s like casting pearls before swine.

  4. It is difficult to be aggressive when your teamates are garbage.

If you attack and lose the ball then the hole you just left moving up will not be covered and now your team is even worse off.

  5. Marco,

Everton are severly outgunned by Spurs, who could challange for the title. It’s not as if Everton are playing DC United.

You’d be gassed too if you were trying to carry Everton basically by yourself.

  6. All good points by everyone but one other thing no one ever talks about is, in terms of league games, what is the furthest Everton have to travel?

London is about 200 miles from Liverpool a four hour drive, an hour less than it takes to drive to the San Francisco area from greater LA.

MLS travel has got a lot more wearing than EPL travel, at least for domestic games.

  7. Amen to that. I feel bad for Everton. Two years ago they were stacked (for a mid table club) and were playing very well. Now, LD comes over and is instantly their best player.

The days with Pienaar and Arteta in there were pretty amazing, and they have lost most of their best players and most of their money. They’ll stay around thought I think.

  8. He’s very talented, but inconsistent. Though in my opinion as well, he should start… I think it’s a work ethic/attitude kinda thing

  9. Yes that’s fair. However, if you’re going to pick one person for Everton to not screw up, it’d usually be Leighton Baines. He’s the best at his job on the team.

  10. I’ll give you the second but it’s Baines’ job to defend. He was beaten by Lennon. So I wouldn’t call that unlucky.

  11. Agree Donovan still looks too tentative with the ball at his feet, always looking to pass instead of going at goal. There was one play in the first half when he ran down the right side, did his inside cutback, and was wide open at the top of the area. But instead of taking a shot or running into the area, he waited for teammates to come up. He’s got to be more aggressive in those situations b/c just trying to set up other guys won’t be enough to make a difference with this group.

  12. Everton was crap. I wasn’t saying anything different. However, since they were trying to play through LD, it’s fair to say he didn’t create enough. A couple of chances that neither Saha nor Anichebe were up to finishing. Yeah, LD was their best player, but I’d like to see better..from him and from the team.

  13. Well the problem today has been more that the holding midfield hasn’t held water. Fellani and Cahill didn’t do crap to slow down Tottenham.

  14. seriously these announcers are clueless about the “wonder goal”. CLEARLY deflected away from Howard. not impressed whatsoever.

  15. Exactly. That’s why they’re all so pumped for his arrival. Last time around they had Pienaar and Arteta (sorta, he might have been coming back from injury then).

  16. I’m not sayng I disagree BUT to be fair, when everton are fully healthy, like Rodwell for example, and have everyone available to them it’s a different team. Plus they’re defense is still decent. Heitinga, Baines, Neville, Distin, etc. Not bad

  17. I disagree. Everton’s only half decent chances have come off LD’s crosses, passes, and drawn fouls. LD was also asked to contribute a lot defensively.

Aside from taking the ball at midfield, dribbling through four defenders, and scoring himself, I’m not sure what more he could have done.

Spurs are a very good side.
