The U.S. Under-23 men's national team finished off its January training camp with a victory, topping Alajuelense 1-0 in a friendly in Costa Rica.

Tony Taylor scored the lone goal, taking a pass from the Columbus Crew's Dilly Duka at the top of the box and finishing in the 41st minute. According to the U.S. Soccer match report, the duo started up top in front of a midfield comprised of Jared Jeffrey, Mix Diskerud, Joe Corona and Freddy Adu.

Kofi Sarkodie, Royal-Dominique Fennell, Zarek Valentin and Jorge Villafana started from right to left across the back line in front of goalkeeper Zac MacMath, who posted his second straight shutout after the U-23s played Saprissa reserves to a scoreless draw on Saturday.

UCLA-turned-MLS midfielders Michael Stephens, Kelyn Rowe and Amobi Okugo all came on as second-half substitutes, as did Philadelphia Union forward Jack McInerney. Isaac Acuna, Andrew Wenger, Sheanon Williams, Sebastien Ibeagha and Brian Perk all watched from the sidelines as unused substitutes.

Next up for Caleb Porter's U-23s are camps in the next two months leading up to the Olympic qualifying tournament. Single-game tickets for the tournament's group-stage matches at LP Field and the Home Depot Center go on sale today.

  1. Not during Qualifying. Oh and usually during qualifying the squads are bigger than 18 players. Only the actually Olympics does it have to be 18 players.

  2. Like Award said, way too many players that will be available for qualifying and there will be even more for the Olympics. It is possible, even likely, that none of the players in this camp ever see the field in London.

  4. I’ve talked about Tony Taylor before on here. I think I’m the only one he actually mentions him as a prospect to track. Fast, quick, and developing in a country that wants skill and offense.
