  1. In addition to his goal and assist, check out that link up play with his back to goal (see 1:42 into the vid) that we sorely need more of from our strikers so that we dont bring a promising attack to a complete standstill like we have done soooooooo manyyyyyyyyyyyy timesssssss with the hold up play from Altidore and Buddle. Wondo drew 3 opposing players towards him and still managed to link up with a surging winger. More of this please!

  2. No Howard, Dempsey, Donovan, Altidore, Chandler, Cherundolo, Bradley, Bocanegra, Onyewu, Edu. For all intents and purposes, this is the reserves camp.

  3. Considering this is hardly our 1st-team senior squad, a U-23 win over this crew would be anything but an indictment of our development system and talent depth. It would prove the contrary, actually.

  4. Yeah, the write ups were all quite critical of Josh Gatt at RB (and he shouldn’t be there, he should be RW with Sheanon Williams or someone else at RB), but whoever played LB seems to have had just as bad a game.

  5. From earlier written remarks, it was reported that the U-23’s RB got beaten for two goals. Although the video was inconclusive, I saw the LB get beaten for two, too far off Wondo on the first, and allows Shea to run the baseline on the second.

  6. MacMath had a really bad match here, but the kid’s a great prospect.

Just look at his starts for the Union last season, there’s no reason to give up on him after one glorified scrimmage.

  7. B’s and C’s? Shea and Beckerman are A’s at this point…at least according to Klinsi. So A, B, and C’s would be more accurate.

  8. The goals the U-23 conceded were easily preventable goals. Bad passing in the back, but they will get better and learn with more experience. Good game and glad no one got hurt in any bone crushing tackles.

  9. +1

Ussoccer really dropped the ball on this one, everyone wants more coverage. They should have streamed it. If not that, they should have posted the video for the entire game. If not that, extended highlights. Instead, we get the usual two minute clip.

  10. Yup. Although as much as I like Bradley and think he would make a good captain for this group, the defensive midfield is decent enough as it is (some combination of Danny Williams, Omobi Okugo, Perry Kitchen, etc.), so a better third overage player may be Fabian Johnson because his versatility would be very useful considering it’s only an 18 man roster.

  11. “The USMNTs don’t have any forwards if you take away Altidore and Agudelo. Who would start?”

Wondo, who scored one goal and set up another.

  12. Stop calling it Camp Cupcake you morons! Dumbest name of all time and it demeans our national team’s camp. Why would a true fan want to do that? Morons!

  13. I would tend to agree although being the #9 or #10 GK for the USA isn’t much to write home about, especially since US GK’s generally have quality careers late into their 30’s

  14. I have never found that to be true. He does, however, delete links to other blogs. Or so it seems. If you link directly to US Soccer, it’s usually okay

  15. I’d be happy with Zak Whitbread playing CB if he makes it through the campaign healthy, it would be a good way to get him in the USMNT fold.

  16. Yep, it’s pretty clear that the overaged players for the Olympics should be defenders. And it also appears as if the keeper is trying to play it out of the back (as per new system) rather than just send it downfield. It’s gonna take some time to understand when to play it on the ground and when to boot it out of there. Scrimmages are the time to learn, I suppose.

  17. Overage players are going to be defensive, that’s for sure.

I’m guessing George John, Geoff Cameron, and Bradley. Would fix a lot of issues in this group.

  18. Hamid made an excellent save there at the end of the video, maybe in the future he could supplant Howard as starter, although alot of goalkeepers do play for forever. Looking forward to Saturday’s friendly with Venezuela.

  19. I don’t understand this mentality. Why would you want to see the U-23 team beat a senior team?! That would be discouraging indictment of our development system and talent depth.

Call it camp cupcake if you wish, but the senior players have been called in because they can play.

  20. this supports my thoughts of the U-23 team all long.. the defending isnt nearly as strong as the attacking. Hopefully they qualify and top defenders can be called in to the olympics.

  21. Remember that this is U23s playing Camp Cupcake (Bs and Cs) with a few of the better U23s.

A good game would be the USMNT (without any of the U23s – Shea, Altidore, Agudelo, etc) playing the U23s (with those same players). The USMNTs don’t have any forwards if you take away Altidore and Agudelo. Who would start? Buddle?

Also, you can see the danger of the possession game if everyone isn’t a good passer. The distribution by the goalkeeper and the cross field pass directly led to 2 goals.

I wish they had included more of the passing sequences so that we could see who was maintaining possession better.

  22. Or…possibly he was already planning to post it later. I’ve run into this before and actually received a nice email explaining it (was buried in my spam but it was there)

  23. That’s true, the one McMath pass out of the back was pretty terrible. The Jeffrey cross-field pass, though was equally terrible.

  24. Shea created 2 of those, and Bunbury scored one. Really makes me want to see what would happen if full U23s (+ Brek, Teal, Juan, Bill/Sean) had taken on the Camp Cupcake team.

  25. Is there a rule about posting links here in the comment section? I posted a link to these highlights yesterday but had it removed by the moderator. Just want to know for future reference…

  26. I’d put a lot of blame on goalie mistakes and poor goalie positioning. That doesn’t worry me since MacMath is behind Hamid (who made some nice saves) and Johnson on our young GK’s totem pole.

  27. That flick by Mixx off of the Adu pass was pretty sweet. As many of us feared, though, the defense seems suspect on that U23 team. There were some bad give-aways in the back and the Senior team made them pay for it.

  28. Who is the burly guy who crosses to Adu in the opening sequence? Don’t recognize him.

Am becoming a Wondo fan. That finish was typical Wondo– Very calm and crisp finish. If we can get good service from the Wings, I’d rather have Wondo than most of our other strikers. Nothing flashy, but gets in good positions and puts the ball on frame.

Weird seeing Freddy Adu withe the U-23s and not the senior squad. Probably good for him, but weird nonetheless…
