A handful of Americans could be in action on Thursday afternoon as the knockout phase of the Europa League begins, including two who will be in direct competition with one another.

Jozy Altidore and Sacha Kljestan are set to battle in the first leg of their Round of 32 Europa League fixtures. Kljestan seems a safe bet to start for RSC Anderlecht as he looks to continue to produce in what has been one of his best seasons as a pro, while Altidore is likely to come off the AZ Alkmaar bench in the club's home fixture. If that alone does not make the match worth watching, the fact that both teams are near the top of their respective league's table should.

Appearing to have won back a starting role, Steve Cherundolo should also see time when Hannover 96 hosts Club Brugge. Cherundolo has started and gone the distance in each of the club's four games since the Bundesliga returned from its winter break, and a fifth consecutive start looks to be in the cards for him.

Here is who the Americans Abroad play in the Europa League on Thursday:

Jozy Altidore and AZ Alkmaar play Sacha Kljestan and RSC Anderlecht.

Oguchi Onyewu and Sporting CP play Legia Warsaw.

Jermaine Jones and Schalke 04 play Viktoria Pizen.

Steve Cherundolo and Hannover 96 play Club Brugge.

What do you think of these matches? Who do you see winning between Kljestan's Anderlecht and Altidore's AZ? Expecting a big performance from Cherundolo?

  1. I don’t think it’s related to your marital status on those other sites, I’m listed as married and don’t go to dating web sites yet I see all those same ads. In addition to the ones that are actually relevant to me.

I think they must be ads targeted at the “typical” user who enters this site, which I assume to be a lot of single males.

  2. Anyone see the Dortmund news? Kagawa out now for 3 weeks, so Lewandowski is expected to become AM with Barrios getting starts up top. Looking like Boyd will be making the bench a lot more and could see some real substitute minutes in the next week before Olympic qualifying.

  3. There is an add-on you can get that blocks all ads and pop up adds, and keeps facebook, google and all the others from tracking where you go, it’s called ghostery

  4. Mine are on target; Kayak and AT&T, both of which I had just been looking at. Except that I don’t intend to fly from NYC since I live in ATL.

  5. I get both German games on TV since I live in Germany. One of the perks of living abroad. The Alkmaar vs Anderlecht game seems the mot intriguing, as both teams are playing well. Nice to see the Altdore vs Klijestan game. Maybe Altidore starts???

  6. I got a advertisement for Slimming World, a weight-loss website. I think my girlfriend and Mom would contend that I need to put on more weight, not lose weight.

So, yes, the algorithm for advertisements on SBI seems a bit funny.

  7. You are not the only one. However, I don’t visit dating sites but my Google Plus and Facebook accounts list me as single so that might be a reason.

  8. By the way, am I the only one that gets random dating sites geared towards various ethnicities (and it’s always changing, brazilian, colombian, thai, russian) on SBI? It’s funny b/c I know the ads are generated based off of cookies and where I’ve been… the other ads are all Vail, American Express, Delta, Teleflora (it was just V-day)…but 1) I’m on my work computer and 2) I never visit dating sites anyways (see reference to Teleflora above).

And this is only on SBI, no other sites. Just curious if I’m the only one.

  9. Would like to see Jozy put a couple in the back of the net and Kljestan control things in midfield for Anderlecht, but I could care less which team wins.
