Donovan doubtful for loan finale with flu

Landon Donovan's Everton loan might be coming to an anticlimactic close.

Everton manager David Moyes said that Donovan has been battling the flu and is doubtful for Saturday's FA Cup match against Blackpool at Goodison Park, though he has not been ruled out completely.

"Landon's been great all round, he's contributed in every area, on the pitch and off the pitch he's fitted in really well," Moyes said on Everton's official website. "He's been a great ambassador for American football players, and I'm sure everyone will look at him and say he's been excellent in the time he's been here. Unfortunately, he's got a bit of flu and he may miss the game. I'm not sure yet."

If Donovan is unable to play, then his second loan spell with Everton will have already been completed. It was supposed to extend through Feb. 26, the day after Everton's derby match against Liverpool. That game had to get rescheduled when Liverpool advanced to the Feb. 26 Carling Cup final, and as a result, Donovan's final game was going to be Saturday's match.

Instead, Everton's victory over Chelsea last Saturday might be his finale, which wouldn't be a bad way to go out. He accounted for an assist in the 2-0 victory at Goodison Park — his sixth in nine matches — and continued to add a dimension to Everton's attack while manning the right flank.

Donovan's loan also included a memorable match against Clint Dempsey in Fulham in the fourth round of the FA Cup, and a battle against Aston Villa in which he shared the field with current Los Angeles Galaxy teammate and on-loan Designated Player Robbie Keane. Donovan was also named Everton's Player of the Month for January, marking the second consecutive loan spell in which he achieved such honors.

  1. he SAYS he played with the flu. i know he’s the greatest of all time, but I still don’t buy it. I’ve had the flu, and was too lethargic to operate the remote.

methinks the “flu” sometimes means “flu like symptoms” or “a cold’

  2. Who cares? You’re like the only guy that follows soccer in America that doesn’t care. You notice how these boards light up anytime mention is made of Landon playing in the EPL? His playing with Everton is much bigger than playing with the Galaxy, especially if it’s a Galaxy preseason game or a late night match in a half-emply stadium on the left coast because the school kids need parking spots.

  3. He will play even if it’s just the last ten minutes or so.

On another topic does anyone know when MLS will hold the Eddie Johnson draft. I thought they would have done it by now for sure? What happens if no one wants him??
