The Colorado Rapids recently hinted that a playmaking midfielder was on his way to the club. We now know who he is.

The Rapids announced on Thursday the acquisition of Martin Rivero on loan for the upcoming season. Rivero, 22, most recently played for second division side Rosario Central in his native Argentina, where he had earned a starting role through the first half of the 2011-2012 season before joining Colorado.

The 5-foot-10 Rivero is expected to join the Rapids before their preseason trip to Hawaii.

What do you think of the Rapids aquiring Rivero? Do you see him starting for Colorado this season?

  1. Wow, it seems like thug-ball is finally coming to an end in Colorado. It seems like the Mastroenis and Caseys are being phased out…

Casey would be a monster with LA, certainly much better than Cristman.

  2. Yes! More young, Latin men who are not afraid to pass the ball and take shots with their strong, tan, muscular legs! Yes! More attractive football indeed!

  3. Christian Gomez first came to DCU on loan (and I believe it was also from Rosario Central though my memory may be wrong). Anyway, the loan was quickly converted into a purchase. What you need to understand is that for lot of young, talented foreign players from reputable leagues, the US is still undervalued. It’s like committing to a club in…Vietnam. Or Qatar. Only with a lot more to see and a better (living environment with people who speak your language. But still perceived as risky. So a loan is a way out. Once Gomez discovered “Hey, there really are a lot of people here that speak Spanish. And the checks are regular and they don’t bounce! And the futbol ain’t so bad” he quickly signed on with DCU.

  4. It is my understanding that a player cannot be loaned to MLS unless MLS has an option to purchase said player. It Rivero is successful, I am sure the option will be exercised.

  5. Supposedly Rivero is a very talented player and wanted to leave Rosario after they blocked a move to Puebla in Mexico. I’m happy to have him in Denver and I’m eager to see what he brings to the able. Oscar is quickly growing on me. He seems very focused on putting the best product on the field.

  6. He wants to leave Rosario Central, so that shouldn’t be a problem. Rapids are saying he will join the team in Colorado before they leave on their trip to Hawaii.

  7. good pick up although i have heard that he might not actually be showing up for Colorado’s camp.. similar to the NE-Moreno situation.. has that been worked out?

  8. I do think he’s being brought in to start in Pareja’s 4-3-3, and at 22, to develop into a key part of the franchise. However, I was slightly disappointed to see that it’s a loan, but that may just be contract stuff, through the end of his 4 mo. contract at Rosario, then he can be signed to a longer deal.

    Gonna be a great year!
