Ream to make gameday squad vs. Wigan

Tim Ream returned to England earlier this week with all the necessary paperwork completed for him to suit up for Bolton Wanderers, and he might not have to wait long at all to make his debut.

Bolton manager Owen Coyle told reporters on Thursday morning that Ream, and two of the other club's recent acquisitions, will be on the gameday squad that will take on Wigan Athletic in a match with relegation implications on Saturday.

"They will all certainly be in the squad," Coyle told the Press Association. "Tim Ream returned (from the U.S.) on Monday with everything sorted with his work permit and passport, and Ryo (Miyaichi) and Marvin (Sordell) have now had a week training with the lads, which has been great.

"It is not always easy with young players coming in and integrating into a squad, but they have settled down and the lads have really taken to them."

Coyle did not say whether Ream was expected to start for 18th-placed Bolton, but if the U.S. international plays, he will go up against an attack the includes the likes of Hugo Rodallega, Franco Di Santo and Jean Beausejour.

What do you think of Ream being named to Bolton's gameday squad vs. Wigan? Think he will start? How would you see him faring against Rodallega and Di Santo?

Share your thoughts below.

  1. You put your best product on the field, no matter the opposition and especially if you’re fighting relegation. This certainly is not a throw-away game for Bolton, as Wigan have beaten better squads than the Trotters this season.

If Ream is ready, play him. If not, don’t risk weakening your central defense, especially against a team with attacking potential in Rodallega, Moses, and Beausejour.

  2. No offense, dude, but it seems that you haven’t ever played competitive sports. Confidence is huge, and a coach would be idiotic to try and kill it in a player’s first game

  3. If he starts I hope he doesn’t try to do too much. Just do YOUR job and you will be fine.

I was going to say I doubt Coyle will start him, but it is rare for a club to have a centerback substitution without an injury. So it’s kind of a start or he won’t play situation in my mind.

  4. Dude, if you’re the coach, then you know it’s a business. You cannot afford to drop down. If you have a chance to play a team like Wigan, you go for the 3 points. Why take the chance with a CB pairing that has not had time to work on their communication? That’s stupid.

  5. The Wigan game is the perfect game to get Ream’s feet wet in the EPL and to build his confidence. Confidence is a pretty important factor. Testing Ream or any new and/or young player in a Man U game as you say, would be stupid.

  6. Im glad there will be at least a chance to see him play Saturday

surely he must be an improvement over what they have.
but its clear Coyle needs a defensive coordinator to assist him with personnel AND tactics selections.

As good as Ream may end up becoming he is not going to transform the leagues worst defense single handed. Not in MLS and certainly not in the Premiership.

    I hope im wrong

  7. I like this, “go up against an attack the includes the likes of Hugo Rodallega, Franco Di Santo…”

and the rest of the guys down at the pub…HA!!

  8. I disagree. Bolton MUST get the 3 points from Wigan. Test Ream against a Man U or such where you know you likely won’t win anyway.

  9. I’m pulling hard for Bolton (and Wigan) to avoid the drop. I have great respect for Owen Coyle and Roberto Martinez as managers, both have done a whole lot with very little (Bolton’s problem being devastation from injuries, Wigan’s being lack of money). Sadly, I see at least one falling to the Championship. Unlike Newcastle or West Ham, it’d be a tough-climb back to the top for either.

  10. Ream has what like 13/14 PL appearances possibly to be in and an upcoming FA Cup game. Hope he does his best and quickly adapts and becomes a starter.

  11. I couldn’t have thought of a better (cough easier cough) team for Ream to get his first start again! Pretty perfect. RBNY USMNT!
